Iraq's interior minister on Saturday refused to comment on rumors that the top terror leader in the country had been taken into custody.
"I wouldn't like to comment for the time being," Interior Minister Falah al-Naqib said when asked about rumors that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had been arrested. "Let's see. Maybe in the next few days we will make a comment about it."
Pressing him, a reporter asked, "Does that mean he is in custody?"
"No comment," the minister repeated.
The rumors about al-Zarqawi followed an interview aired on an Arab television station earlier this month in which a Saudi man arrested for a deadly truck bombing claimed that he heard from other insurgents that al-Zarqawi had been arrested by Iraqi police in Fallujah but released because authorities didn't recognize him.

Well, this is a more reliable source than Newmax, but I'll still wait and see before pouring a celebratory drink.
Yeah, but when are they going to catch Emmanuel Goldstein?
It almost sounds like they had him, he got away, but they think they know where he is.
Hope they get him soon, if not already.
I just saw this moronic headline at BBC News:
"Danger haunts Iraq's campaign trail"
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/4197367.stm
Sheeeeeeeze... Handwringer alert!
"With just a week to go before elections, Iraq has seen an upsurge of violence by insurgents determined to drive out the Americans and their allies. How long can the region sustain the fight for what President George W Bush has called the worthy prize of Iraq's liberation?"
-The BBC shows their typical "soft-bigotry" by implying that the Iraqi People have no need or desire for freedom.
If the perp is still at large, it might bring him out to dennounce the 'false' message, and that exposes him to tracking.
If the perp has been caught, then holding off on declaring that fact so as to get the right PR and play time could work quite effectly in boosting the morale of Iraq's putative electorate.
Smile, I think you left me in the dust with that response.
Hoping Katie Colonic gets Rathers job, that will put the finishing touches on the eye network.
It's still rumor. Isn't this like the fifth story over the last several months with this rumor? I'm surprised it isn't another World Net Daily story. I'll believe it when I see it on CBS. Oh, wait. That won't work. I'll believe it when the libs start complaining about his treatment or the Red Cross says he's not being given cable TV.
LOL! Well, it's not reported by the JP as fact, but their digging for a response gives me hope. They have so much more credibility than many of our outlets.
The Hollweird morons will be the first ones to claim he is just an Iraqi Patriot doing what anyone would do.
Probably about the 105th story. This seems to be the most reliable source in recent memory, though.
well he will cringe every time he looks into a mirror until the day we waste that M***** F*****
Heads will roll.
It could be that they want to wait until after the election. If they do have Zarqawi detained, they could use him to quell attacks leading up to and during the election.
I really hope we have him or do get him soon if we don't have him. This guy is one sick shred of human debree.
Maybe the Iraqi's are tired of being asked every two weeks if an 'unconfirmed rumor' that Zarqawi or Osama are in custody is true. Maybe they are having fun with them. LOL
Yes, and it would deliver a huge blow (pardon the pun) to the terrorist movement in Iraq. I'm hoping they're not publicizing his capture so that they can drain every bit of information out of him about their network before they scatter.
