I say we should get the hell out of that dump right now and take our money with us.This is the reason why I don't think we should ever give a dime to countries who are unfriendly towards us.Every single time we go to the aid of a country in need we always end up looking like a bunch of suckers.Let them eat sand,it's what they deserve.

Yeah, because they did not report every day for nearly a week in a remote part of the world, it has to be a scam.

I suppose that there might be some context where your post might happen to actually be funny.

I don't suppose that this is that time.

How about this: You go stuff yourself, and I'll continue to try to live my life as a decent human being. How about that? Does that work for you?

I did not realize that CARING FOR OTHER PEOPLE is conditional on their LIKING US.

You have a very dark, depraved heart.

But aid workers said authorities might fear that relief groups or journalists would help the insurgents, who've been fighting for independence for the province since 1976

Uh huh...lemme guess, Red Crescent, International Red Cross, Al Jazeera, Mary Mapes...

Einstein, the people on the boat that were manning the guns were waving off these terrorist monkeys that got too close to the boat. If they had had bullets in their weapons and not been conditioned to be afraid of taking the initiative, they would have saved many lives.

I'm talking about our boy Bush, who ties the hands of our troops behind their backs by not letting them bomb the crap out of a stupid cemetery where a bunch of filthy rats were hiding at while they were killing off our troops from it. I'm talking about the same guy who is giving illegals a free ride at the expense of our national security and national identity. I am not blaming bush for the Cole bombing, just stating in general that when you have a weak leader, the nation is weak. I'm including clinton it this.

Rich vs. poor, yes. I just read an NGO document stating that millions of people live on less than a dollar a day.

Those kind of statistics really bug me. Maybe a dollar a day is pretty well off in their region, who can say? At any rate, the US taxpayer should hold them to their "dollar a day" estimate for maximum blowback, and for humanitarian fulfillment, private donations and help will proceed as needed.

Did I just hear a woman say "shove it"?

I was speaking to one of the crew onboard HMAS KANIMBLA which is off the coast of Aceh at the moment. By their best estimate, the number of dead there is probably around 250-300k. There are a lot of towns and villages that just don't exist anymore.

For once I think the Indonesians aren't stretching the truth.

"the worst disaster in the last 300 years"--that is NOT TRUE.

The China Earthquake of 1976

No other earthquake in this century has been as catastrophic or has claimed as many lives as the great earthquake that struck the city of Tangshan, in Northern China, on July 28, 1976.

Tangshan, a thriving industrial city with one million inhabitants, is located only about 95 miles east, and slightly south, of Beijing. Although the region had experienced moderate seismic activity in the past, the city of Tangshan has been built on unstable, alluvial soil. To make matters worse, The city is located in the center of an area with major crustal faults on four sides. Furthermore, a 25-mile long fault passes through Tangshan, where only few of its structures are earthquake-resistant.

In the early morning hours of July 28, while the city was asleep, the magnitude 8.0 earthquake with its epicenter right on the city broke a five-mile section of the fault. Along the west side of the fault the land moved five feet northward in relation to the land on the east side. The east block tipped downward at the northern end of the break, and upward toward the south end. Over a four-by-five mile area the devastation of the city was nearly total. The force of the quake motions were so strong that people reported being thrown in the air. Within seconds, thousands died. Property destruction was unbelievable. Bridges, railroads, homes, factories were completely leveled.

In the harbor city of Tientsin, 60 miles to the southwest, and in Beijing to the west, the quake jolts forced thousands of frightened people into the streets seeking refuge from aftershocks.

The extent of the destruction and number of deaths in Tangshan and elsewhere in China was never disclosed officially. However, based on the density of population, it was fairly accurately estimated that there were at least 655,000 people dead, and 780,000 injured. These figures make the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, the second worse earthquake in recorded history. The most destructive earthquake ever, as reported earlier, occurred at Hausien in China's Shensi Province in 1556.

Exactly. Go down to Costa Rica, a beautiful and friendly country--but more importantly one that has been "annointed" by the arbiters of 'International Social Justice' and on the Atlantic Side (non tourist side) a fresh lobster dinner for two with appetizers and a coupla drinks will cost you about $20--with a generous tip for the waiter.

My point being a dollar still does still go a long way most places. And affords people a better standard of living.

P.S. None of this is meant to be disrespectful about the tragic loss of life and grief the survivors are experiencing.

I wouldn't go quite that far. The aid effort has definately made it easier for the Indonesian government to work with Australia/US accross the board (including against terrorists) and it has improved the view of the west by many Indonesians (they still hate us though).

The biggest danger is the western media in Aceh taking GAM's side in the conflict with the Indonesian government. Once that starts happening you can kiss any gains we made goodbye.

Until the bomb went off, there would have been no cause to shoot up the boat that pulled up next to the Cole. If the Cole had unarmed guns at the time of the explosion it might make for an interesting, yet useless, point of order.
