Republican to Lead Immigration Revolt Against Bush
By Alan Elsner
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Republican member of the House of Representatives vowed on Wednesday to lead a revolt against President Bush (news - web sites)'s immigration reform proposals and predicted that up to 180 party members would support him.
Bush in an interview with the Washington Times published on Wednesday said he plans to force a debate in Congress this year on his proposal that would allow some illegal immigrants to obtain legal work permits in the United States.
Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, who heads the House Immigration Reform Caucus, said he was determined to block the legislation. The caucus, which had 71 members in the last Congress, argues for stronger action to stop illegal immigration and a reduction of legal migration.
"Why is this so important to the president?" Tancredo said. "Is it just the corporate interests who benefit from cheap labor? Do they have such a strong grip on our president so that he is actually willing to put our nation at risk, because open borders do put our nation at risk?
"Is it petulance, because we were able to stop it in the last Congress? Why is it so important to give amnesty to people who have broken the law?" Tancredo said.
"I'm willing to lead a fight against this and I would say there are at least 180 members of our Republican caucus who are willing at least to stop amnesty for illegal immigrants," he told Reuters in a telephone interview.
Bush has repeatedly said he views immigration reform as an important issue for his second term. In the Washington Times interview, he said it was near the top of his agenda.
"Look, whether or not you agree with the solution or not, we have a problem in America when you've got 8 million undocumented workers here," he said.
BUSH CONFIDENCE
Bush expressed confidence he could win over opponents, as he did in passing tax reform during his first term. "Initially out of the box, some people said, over my dead body would they pass tax relief ... If I listened to all that, I'd just quit, you know. But that's not the way I think."
But analysts agree that immigration reform could be much more divisive for Republicans since growing numbers of rank-and-file voters are becoming concerned at the continued influx of illegal immigrants across the Mexican border.
"No issue, not one, threatens to do more damage to the Republican coalition than immigration," said David Frum, a former White House speech writer in Bush's first term.
"There's no issue where the beliefs and interests of the party rank-and-file diverge more radically from the beliefs and interests of the party's leaders," he wrote in the National Review last month.
Bush insists he is not offering amnesty to illegal immigrants but Tancredo said that was a "manipulation of language, the kind of thing (former President) Bill Clinton would have done. There is an issue of integrity here and an issue of honesty," he said.
Right. I admitted as much in my last post. I couldn't remember word-for-word, but "adamantly against illegal immigrants" is using emotional words. It was a play up on her part.
Yeah it's sad that they are willing to have at least another 4 years of selling military secrets to the chicomms with hillary, just because of an incessant irrational animus towards people who clean toilets and roof houses in 100 degree heat.
I do think that there's a potential means for employers to get their butts sued--civil rights violations, restraint of trade, trafficking in quasi-slavery, maybe even RICO. Then they couldn't even afford slave wages to get their toilets scrubbed for them.
JMO, he's kinda of like hillary, it's all about him.
live in SoCal and observe the same. I have a pretty good career now, but I have worked as a mechanic and driven truck to pay for college and grad school. Such work is below no one. It may not be pleasant, but it is honest labor.
Thanks RKV. I myself waited on tables and worked at a car wash (back-breaking!), of course, that was a long time ago.
We need these kind of jobs for teens, or those who do not finish high school, all kinds of reasons to have jobs available that do not require a higher education.
Bush will get a large part of his immigration proposal through the House with support of 180+ House Republicans. The guest worker regularization proposal will be modified, but some portion is going to pass. Bet on it.
Maybe not me, but I want entry level jobs for my kids and know that they're not made to fell as second class citizens in their own counrty because they don't speak another language.
But I'll bet your heart doesn't bleed even a little bit when the hospitals face foreclosure because of the demand for uncompensated care (the law demands that ERs treat everyone)...or the US children in the schools their parents support can't take art or music because the budget has to go for "English as a second language."
Your heart only bleeds for you and your own lazy self-interest.
I'd back Tancredo.
I like Bush and voted for him, but he is plain wrong on the immigration issue.
Has anybody besides me noticed that the ONLY "Republican" involved in all these "press releases" is Tom Tancredo?
He has a better PR machine than Judicial Watch every thought about having. Does he send out fund raising letters, too?
Huh nothing about other factors such as lawyers closing down hospitals with their incessant lawsuits and nothing about school vouchers where parents could pick their own school.
Tancredo and Zell Miller need to go pay ol' Dubya a visit and 'splain this matter to him and get his thinkin' straightened out on this issue. Thank the good Lord Dubya won the election, but on this issue, that boy ain't right!
Correct, with the "right kind of people" being either Americans, or foreigners who are in the U.S. legally and who have the legal right to work here. Companies that hire illegal aliens are in violation of federal law. You don't condone violating federal law, do you?
May these lawbreakers land in jail.
Failing that, may these lawbreakers face a class action of angry taxpaying and lawabiding citizens who are tired of footing the bill (in the collapse of social services) so that a few LAZY BUMS AND THEIR LAZY CONCUBINES can enjoy the privilege of being waited on for cheap.
I'm pulling for Tancredo also. I wish I could move into his district in Colorado. Thanks for the ping.
Not only condones, but I'll bet profits from it. Could swear bayourod was around here somewhere...
May these lawbreakers land in jail.

Dude, I'm serious taks a chill pill, your rantings are doing your position no good, but for some reason I think you will be like a democrat and not take some helpful advice
