I think he salutes that way so that photogs get a pic of his face. Stepping of the plane, mr photo op, probably does a quick study of where the reporters are and salutes in a way that would obstruct his face. If he saluted correctly here his arm would cover his face at that picture angle. Probably a prop soldier too.

As a civilian, kerry should not even be rendering a salute and even if he does it should not be returned.

A "possible" explanation is that he injured his right amr or shoulder, but with kerry, there is no way to tell why he'd do something like that. he might just be showing his real contempt for the military.

If he were caught off guard with a large piece of luggage in his right hand, would that make it excusable?

Actually, it looks like JFnQerry might have been inserted into that photo. That doesn't excuse his saluting leftie but the original phot from which it was cropped might be something different entirely.

As someone else mentioned, comparing the edges of the figures sees Qerry as "very sharp" and the AFOfficer somewhat fuzzy.

In that case, saluting with the left hand is acceptable. I remember seeing a group of three soldiers in salute, and one had his right arm in a sling and so saluted with his left hand.

However, there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with Kerry's right hand.
