Right. A close reading of Wheeler's articles show that he isn't literally saying we should "Nuke Mecca" - he's saying we should "Threaten to Nuke Mecca" as a deterrent against future attacks.
But everyone knows it's an empty threat, so it's not much of a deterrent.
You don't understand the issue of the legitimacy of Islam and that no amount of so-called "PR" can overcome the lost legitimacy of their primary symbol being destroyed. At that point, Osama would become history's "has been", to disappear off history's pages.
We should definitely target their primary symbol of legitimacy, which (supposedly) makes Islam superior to all other religions.
A corollary to that is that Islam must destroy Judaism and Christianity as the only serious competitors to it. But without that symbol, Islam is destroyed at its heart -- never to come back again.
Mind you, we're not talking about destroying a city full of people, but rather -- the symbol alone. With the symbol gone, the people will "cave". The Christians and Jews can then subject every single last Muslim to infinite ridicule of their so-called religion -- just like the prophets of the Old Testament did to Israel's enemies. I would make it totally relentless ridicule, using their destroyed symbol of Islam, as the point of the spear.

I hate wedgies.
Nuking Mecca is what Osama wants ! He has been trying to get us to respond rashly in order to whip up fervor amongst his one billion brethern.
America's international corporations (globaloney) are doing a good job of furthering American cultural domination. It's why the world hates us.
The US military is why the world now respects us.
BUMP
If we threatened to send Haliburton there to make improvements then the left would REALLY consider Bush a warmonger.
Looks good to me....they won't take us seriously until we do.........
You said -- "Fabulous PR for him to whip Muslims throughout the world into a frenzy."

What is funnier is the wnd poll which asks opinion on the mecca nuke thing. WND is conservative, but in my opinion, not a radical site. The #1 answer was that not only should we nuke mecca, but lace the bomb with pigs blood.
Too late. Halliburton has already been there for decades.
Its not the actual USE but the credible THREAT to use nuclear weapons which is used to support policy - if Bush can be convincing enough in his threat it would probabaly be an effective deterrent. However if Mecca were to be actually nuked, I'm sure LOTs of muslims would start losing their belief in Islam blaming Allah's inability to protect his own house
The problem with your assessment is that bin Laden is not the "disease" -- Islam is the disease.
Kill bin Laden and his associates and the disease continues. Kill the core symbols of Islam and the disease dies.
And by the way, I'm not saying "threaten" -- I'm saying "Do it!"

We can only hope he has : )
This makes sense, and God, I hope it's true.
What we should do, after we vaporize Mecca, is air-drop tons of pig carcasses over the site.
Libya came around like a lamb, and that's not fantasy land. A phone call from GW with plain talk or a diplomatic note handed over in private is not boots on the ground stuff we see on TV or read in the papers, but yields richer rewards.
straw that breaks (plain old verb) the camel's back--possessive noun: the back is the camel's. Good comments though.
