Homosexuality, fornication cause of tsunami?

A Muslim Saudi professor says the earthquake and tsunami in south Asia were punishment from Allah for homosexuality and fornication committed by residents and visitors of affected countries at Christmastime.

A television interview of Sheik Fawzan Al-Fawzan, a professor at the Al-Imam University, was translated and posted on the Internet by the Middle East Media Research Institute TV Monitor Project, or MEMRI TV. The interview can be viewed on MEMRI's website.

These great tragedies and collective punishments that are wiping out villages, towns, cities and even entire countries, are Allah's punishments of the people of these countries, even if they are Muslims," stated Al-Fawzan. "Some of our forefathers said that if there is usury and fornication in a certain village, Allah permits its destruction."

The professor singled out beach resorts as places of sexual sin.

"We know that at these resorts, which unfortunately exist in Islamic and other countries in south Asia, and especially at Christmas, fornication and sexual perversion of all kinds are rampant," he said. "The fact that it happened at this particular time is a sign from Allah. It happened at Christmas, when fornicators and corrupt people from all over the world come to commit fornication and sexual perversion.

That's when this tragedy took place, striking them all and destroyed everything. It turned the land into wasteland, where only the cries of the ravens are heard. I say this is a great sign and punishment on which Muslims should reflect."

Al-Fawzan urged Muslims to atone for their sin.

"All that's left for us to do is to ask for forgiveness We must atone for our sins and for the acts of the stupid people among us and improve our condition. We must fight fornication, homosexuality, usury, fight the corruption on the face of the earth, and the disregard of the lives of protected people."

All I got to say is God has sure got lousy aim. I think maybe the Islamic fundies are just jealous that they did not think of using a Tsunami to commit indiscrimate acts of terror so they lay a guilt trip on God. We must do something about all those children who flock to the beaches at Christmas to engage in sexual peversion. (SARCASM AT WORK) Crap like this from any religious leader just burns me. IT WAS TECTONIC PLATES AND NO WARNING SYSTEMS THAT CAUSED THESE DEATHS. QUIT BLAMING GOD.

I guess you don't live in Tennessee.

Nor Kentucky. I've heard several "Christians" here as of late say that God destroyed these areas through the tsunami as punishment for __________! (some said Islam, some said homosexuality, some said the child sex-trade in Thailand)

Mind you, these were not exactly the mainstream Christians, but there are people out there proclaiming this from our side as well. Every religion has its nuts.

As Christianity teaches: War, disease, pestilence, flood, earthquake, etc. are all caused by one thing: sin. A person can and often does suffer from a natural retribution for the sins of others. That is why there is no such thing as a 'harmless immorality.'

Actually by this definition, he was not. Love the sinner hate the sin comes to mind. HUMAN religous zealots hate everyone but their own. Had Jesus been like modern religious zealots, there would be no Chrisitanity. IMHO

Yes indeed. God built an imperfect world full of imperfect people and gave both free will. Blame the Earth!

My, We're painting with a broad brush. I agree that it is incorrect to presume to know with certainty the actions and motivations of God, and I cringe when Christian leaders on RARE occasions fall into this trap.
I do not think it is a biblical principle to wish ill on sinners, because we are all sinners. If God had wiped me out because of my sins the first 43 years of my life, I would have never had the opportunity to know His grace, mercy and love.
Please do not paint all Christians as only ignorant and judgmental. When we do exhibit those traits, however,(as all people do) we are violating, not following, the tenets of our faith.

Damn, I was under the impression the earthquake caused it.

I know God controls everything, including earthquakes. I know there are consequences for sin.

I don't know what caused the tsunami nor does any potential flamer. . at least what beyond the earthquake.
___________

well, actually we do know what caused the earthquake, and we know what causes the tectonic plates to shift that caused the earthquake, even. We have demonstrable science for that.

At the time Christ was on this earth, most of the mainstream political leaders considered him a zealot. Zealots believe in absolute truth, it is either good or bad. Christ himself said "you are either with me or against me". Can't be anymore absolute than that.

Sounds like you need to take heed of what he has to say. To call Christians "whackos" reaks of your ignorance and lack of morality.

When religionists from the major faiths talk this way, I envision natives in grass skirts and bones through their noses shaking coconut rattles at the sky.....is there any difference?

No, there isn't. And why have we been hearing all this "God's wrath" talk about this particular natural disater and not the various others we've seen in (very) recent history? 30,000 dead in Iran in '03 (from an earthquake), not a peep about The Almighty. 20,000 dead following a '01 quake in India, dead silence. 40,000 dead from a shaker in Iran in 1990..........55,000 dead in Armenia in 1988. .......the list goes on and on. But for some strange reason if the death toll is raised past a certain amount "God" enters the picture.

Yep, the "thinking" of the folks you're referring to is virtually indistinguishable from those in primitive pagan cultures, where every drop of rain or bolt of lightning was seen as either a punishment or a blessing by various "deities." The difference is that those peoples didn't have the benefit of knowledge of modern science (plate tectonics, electricity, etc.). No such excuses for today's bunch.
