Maria donates $10,000 to Thai quake victims 29th December 2004
Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, due to play an exhibition match in Thailand against Venus Williams, will donate $10,000 to help victims of the killer tsunamis that hit the kingdom, a minister said on Wednesday.
Deputy Prime Minister and tennis association head Suwat Liptapanlop said the Russian starlet, scheduled to arrive in Bangkok late on Wednesday, had notified him about her generosity.
"She informed us that she wanted to donate 10,000 dollars of her own money to the government's victim relief fund," Suwat said.
The fund, launched yesterday, had already received donations amounting to 108 million baht ($2.77 mn), according to media reports.
Although a gala dinner to be held for Sharapova and Williams would be cancelled out of respect for the unprecedented loss of life, the match scheduled for January 2 in the northern city of Chiang Mai was due to go ahead.
So true. Thank you for some welcome reason on this thread.
She also did it out of site of the press and didn't ADVERTISE.
Instead of charity, she'll have to write it off as a marketing expense.
Very poor form by her handlers.
She is certainly versatile.
Be specific.
How much did you give? Jerk.
Gracious. I hope you meant that as in "at least she did this."
Now, now, what are you tring to do? Take away the rationale of the people who make Free Republic look like a sewer?
I'm giving sweat and blood right now. Ignoramus =P
The creator of this thread linked us all to this.
She seems to also need a resume these days. But to view it you need a password.
Strangest link to a thread as a source I've just about ever seen I must say.
You wrote; "How could you possible be more arrogant and condescending? Go back to DU if that is your attitude, you sanctimonious twit!"
If you were in any way familiar with my posts you would not have been so ignorant and foolish.
Go to class................do a search, dumb2003.
Man, some of you people on this thread are real buttholes.
And I am positive you don't know who you are.
It's damn embarassing.
Did you check out where the source of this thread goes, it's a hoot.
Very bad source.
Do tell.
The woman gives 10,000 dollars to a cause and you disrespect her. You are one shallow being.
Agreed. But we don't know her heart or intent. As other posters have stated, her wish may be to spur on her fans, probably many who are young, to help.
My guess is the guy who said she should have spent the money on a boob job is a 300 pound porker with a set of awesome man-boobies which would put poor Maria's to shame.
ROFL!..........not quite. ;-)
********
check out this description of Maria as a nine year old.
"On the court she reminded me of the margay, a small wild cat, like a miniature leopard, that lives in the jungles of Central America. Her emerald-green eyes had the look of a creature who you knew would never quite belong to anyone but herself. She was still only peanut-sized, as her father, Yuri, called her, with long, skinny legs and arms, corn-blonde hair, braces on her teeth and a dusting of freckles on her nose. But when she went to strike the ball, her little cat-face would bunch into a snarl, her body would coil itself like a spring behind her racket, she would hurl herself at the ball and, with an ear-splitting banshee scream that sent shivers down your spine, unleash a laser-guided ground stroke." - Simon Worrall ****
Sweet............
The White House just announced we have upped our donation to 300 million.
Just watch the malcontents and purists go nuts about that!
And people wonder why others believe the conservatives are mean.
Oh please. Charity should be anonymous, that's a fair belief, and it's shared by many around here.
"But - I thought it was a rule to have pics on a Sharpova post?"
I've been scrolling down, but no pictures.
Where are the pics?
Thanks for the very welcome defense, now I'll be rooting for a Brit in the Masters! ;-)
