I loved getting QSL cards from pirate radio stations in the 90's. Hope Radio, RFM, Voice of Layrngitis, etc., it was always a surprise to have my Grundig signed on to 715.15, and while doing homework, hear a mysterious, illegal voice spring out of the static wilderness.

"This is Hope Radio."

I take exception to that as well. I've been involved with radio for many years and will be taking the test soon. Better people in Ham than most hobbies.

What the hell is so embarassing about Ham Radio?

I've been one for 15 years, and I can think of few other hobbies that perform as critical a service as we do.

Geez...

Sheesh, this "hobby" has been useful to me over the years. On the air since Sept. '63. Yes, TIME is in the rack next to WEEKLY WORLD NEWS!

Yet another reason why Time Magazine sucks.

Just donated my old Yaesu FT-101E to the local club here before I move next week, in fact. They get a servicable near-indestructible boat-anchor radio, and I don't have to lug it up to Virginia...seems like a fair trade. :)

Northeast liberal elistists at Time Magazine strike again.

They just don't understand why their subsciptions are falling.

I'm a No-code tech who has lots of respect for those generals and extras.

The hobby is embarrassing because, many of the participants are accomplished in technical fields, tend to be somewhat conservative politically, and it requires some intelligence.

For that matter, there's nothing wrong with stamp-collecting, either!

A hurricane ripped through the northern part of NC and worked itself upwards. My best friend is a ham and she and many other hams went to local shelters to set up emergency communications. Electricity went out, land lines were down, and cellphones were useless. Good thing there were a lot of people around here with such a "shameful hobby."

Out of curiosity. Why use a HAM radio in this day and time, when all the HAM users can simply start an IRC channel or something? Or use FR lol.

I'm an amateur radio operator (HAM) ... not embarrassed by it in the least. I would be embarrassed to be seen reading Time magazine however.

Time would whore itself for Ham radio reports from an isolated area that was news topic for the day/week.

I think longer than FR has operated the Liberty Net, a Ham radio conversational group, has operated on Saturday nights on 3.950 MHZ to discuss news of the day and politics specifically. Vic Misek, W1WCR is the discussion leader. Do a google search and one will find many interesting items in reference to this. In 1999 and 2000 they were jammed constantly and the jammers seemed to be protected by the Clinton government as the Liberty Net participants were not very nice to Clinton and Gore. Since then and after GWB was elected the jamming and trouble has died down.

It was obvious to me that there was a concerted effort to have a jammer near any outspoken Liberty Net participant to hinder radio discourse. They filibustered the frequency and the government did little to prevent it but they warned Liberty Net that they were indeed broadcasting and had to stop. Every time the Net would bring up a Clinton scandal or talk of the Arkancides the jamming would dramatically worsen. It is akin to the race baiters and Nazi baiters we have on FR every time mention of closing the borders and rounding up all the criminal aliens is discussed. It is intended to silence the process of com-ming together over a unifying issue.

Check out W1WCR and Liberty Net on Google as I think it is worth the time.
