Power Line Named Blog of the Year: TIME also names Power Line its Blog of the Year. Before this year, blogs were a curiosity, a cult phenomenon, a faintly embarrassing hobby on the order of ham radio and stamp collecting. But in 2004, blogs unexpectedly vaulted into the pantheon of major media, alongside TV, radio and, yes, magazines, and it was Power Line, more than any other blog, that got them there, writes TIMEs Lev Grossman.

Yep. Ham Radio operators were doing that as far back as WWII. Barry Goldwater's home station in Scottsdale, AZ was running phone patches during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
BSF,
Thanks for your work. Back in the day, prior to email and cell/sat phone technology, when the turnaround time for a USPS letter was measured in weeks, the only other way the GIs had to make contact with loved ones was with the HAM MARS affiliates. Screw TIME.
You care to weigh in on this?
Sounds like the author hasn't a clue about the function of Ham Radio Operator's. My father was one BIG TIME and was part of a vital communications link that can function when all other forms of communication are down. He's gonna regret he said that...
Gee, the liberals at Time Magazine find stamp collecting an "embarassing" hobby. They probably also find a genealogy hobby, "embarassing." Those elites at Time, meanwhile, find movies by Oliver Stone "Brilliant." Yet another example of just how out-of-touch blues are with the reds.
I've been a licensed ham operator since 1992, upgraded to the Extra class one year to the date of my Novice license, and I've been in Army MARS for about 5 years now.
Great Lakes ?
Well, you should be. The article says so. :-)
We do Field Day every year so we are prepared to set up an emergency communications station with antennas, generators, the works.
A jet from our local AFRB slammed into a local apartment complex a few years back. 911 and the police and fire bands were so overloaded they simply quit working - nobody's cell phones worked for the same reason. Couple of land line phone calls and our local radio clubs were there with all their equipment - had a base near the crash site, a 2 meter repeater, and individuals with 2m radios at every hospital within 10 miles as well as all local fire stations and precincts. The clubs staffed the equipment on a rotating basis until the police and fire could get their system up again.
What has THIS guy done lately for civil defense/disaster preparedness, other than wring his hands?
Ignorant comment from the author.
When the communications infrastructure fails during disasters or terrorist attacks, it will be your local hams with their own radio gear transmitting emergency messages into and out of the effected area.
I am also a licensed amateur radio operator.(Ham)

What could be embarrassing about being on the cutting edge?
Ham ops were sending packets through the airwaves before the internet was a gleam in albore's eye!
Low power hf sending messages around the world!
Hams, less the ARRL (voluntary shills for the FnCC) are some of the best and brightest in this country.
Figures time would get it wrong!

Yeah, the libs are embarassed by ANYTHING that is even remotely stimulating intellectually.
They focus primarily on reflexive, emotional responses generated by the gonads.
Human brains are supposed to wither from atrophy.
the only ham i care about is glazed (with Pineapples). However, I was talking with a ham guy the other night. It occured to me that ham radio was a means of international communication before the Internet. most blogs are a static form of broadcast sent into nowhere. At least the ham guys talk to one another in real time.
I am still working on my license....I am a Ham wannabe
