Earlier today, responding to these remarks by the UN's Jan Egeland
But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.
"It is beyond me why are we so stingy, really," the Norwegian-born U.N. official told reporters. "Christmastime should remind many Western countries at least, [of] how rich we have become."
"There are several donors who are less generous than before in a growing world economy," he said, adding that politicians in the United States and Europe "believe that they are really burdening the taxpayers too much, and the taxpayers want to give less. It's not true. They want to give more."
I sent this email to Jan Egeland
You seem to be under the impression that the ONLY way that individuals can donate money to charities and disasters is if the government TAKES the money from them in the form of taxes and gives it to YOU.
Leaving aside the fact that the UN is the last place I want MY government to give money (see Oil for Food scandal), we don't need to be taxed into giving. The United States is a generous country and we WILL give a lot of money to this cause; we're just not going to give it to YOU to spend as you see fit.
The people who really need and deserve the money will get it, without you having the opportunity to cut your slice off of it.

P.S. Forget about a UN and/or world tax; it's not going to happen.
We wouldn't be in there long if I was on the floor, you can believe that.
He made the "sometimes the mask slips off" remark and said Jan's backpeddling was a crock, on three points, if you go back and read the transcript
Sammon was great..partial (as I missed some of it) #191
Now Gibson is on the UN Oil for Food scandal.
Precisely.
If it's not government money, it doesn't count.
Oh, they are probably blaming America for the crisis.
Who cares? Are any of us actually going to change the channel to CNN?
Not me! LOL
Doesn't it feel GOOD to get that off your chest?
good work howlin!
hi sir!
Now this is something else that is making me furious; I am not happy with Bush because he's being railroaded by the PRESS to come out and make a statement.
Did you hear the press conference today? The press wanted to know why the president shouldn't come out and let those people SEE him in charge.
Let's all pretend they don't have the knowledge to know that an earthquake might cause a tsunami, but they do know enough to expect the president of the United States to come on TV and sooth their problems. (As if they have electricity now!)
Who, the UN?
Then why would they want our money?
Bump to all that!
And being such, I'm sure she's accustomed to dumb men who then later corrected their mistake and apologized. The world is disproportionately full of them and I myself account for a dozen.
I don't need to hear him speak about the disaster, and you're absolutely right about the press trying to stampede him into one, no doubt for another opportunity to slam the US. I want 43 to come out and stick up for the US. And tell the bloody UN to STHU.
Again..The UN measures govt. giving only and does not factor in our food aid, private contributions..Per capita we give the most.
Beats working for a living.
This is true. How can they know how much they'll have to skim.........LOL.
yep, Sure Does......by the way great post!!!
I sent Kofi an e-mail. I told him I use the U.N. flag to wipe my boots.
