UN calls US response to tsunami disaster "stingy"
CNN Inside Politics | December 27, 2004 | CNN

Posted on 12/27/2004 2:04:39 PM PST by ejdrapes

I was watching CNN's Inside Politics today (no transcript up yet) and they had a panel on - someone from the Washington Post, LA Times (Ron Brownstein) and Time magazine (Karen Tumulty). They were discussing our response to the disaster and the host of the program mentioned that the UN called our response "stingy". Then the panel went on to talk about how we "fumbled" this and were basically AWOL for one day. This just really made my blood boil. What have other countries done? The Brits say over 10,000 of their citizens were on holiday in that area. It's a large tourist area for Europeans. Where's the criticism of the EU and its member nations? And do we really have to play politics at a time like this?

.....Last time I checked the news, the US pledged $20 million in aid, and actually Australia has just now pledged $35 million. Personally, I think that's disgraceful given the size of the US economy (20 times that of Australia), and worse still when considered next to the billions the US is willing to spend on its other little endeavours in parts of the world for what gain? .....

< snip >

The basis for an effective UN must start with every country putting in its fair share. If by a measure of GDP the US pledge relative to other Western countries looks 'stingy', then whether you accept it or not, it doesn't change the fact that it may just be 'stingy' .....

Hey tim

Let me tell you something:

The US feeds most of the world's hungry---the UN does NOT.

The US protects the downtrodden and abused---the UN does not
(In fact, UN troops usually go on raping sprees!)

The US is overly generous with its money, the UN usually is stealing it (remember the 20 billon oil-for-palaces scandal?)

Asfor what we have pledged for the Asia victims---we are seeing what is nneded forst---then we will send what else is needed.

In the Meantime Americans are (again) opening their wallets--yet even more money

What the hell have YOU done--TROLL!

I have reconsidered. You are right.

If the US would just give the UN more money they could afford hookers rather than raping refugees around the world. We should be ashamed and I for one will send 50% of my pay to Koffee Anon personally as retribution.

I love it how CNN wants to be taken seriously. However, at the same time they give such a leftist one sided tilt to a story. Washington Post, LA Times (Ron Brownstein) and Time magazine (Karen Tumulty) are all hard corp liberal. How is this fair and balanced reporting?

I happen to agree with this...so many are so quick to demand the USA send aid...but whoa, whose money is it? Besides, send material aid and liberals, not cash. And only to those countries who have sided with us in the War on Terror...

NOT BUSH'S TO GIVE

"The UN's Under-Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs has criticized the USA for only giving $15 million to the effort to help those effected by the quake and tsunami. I have to admit that when I heard on the radio yesterday that Colin Powell had announced that each of the affected countries would immediately receive $100,000, that it was the smallest amount of money I had ever heard mentioned in the same sentence with the words 'United States.' I mean that is less than a loaded Hummer. But then I remembered the old Davy Crockett story where-in Congressman Davy voted against giving aid to the victims of a Washington, DC fire because it wasn't his to give.

"I think this would be a great time for Bush to announce that he could not give anything from the country, as the country itself has no legitimate authority to dispense monies for those kinds of purposes. I bet if he then asked the American people to do what they could, the folks in Sri Lanka and Sumatra would see the real spirit of American generosity.

"I guess I have finally become dependent on the government myself. When I imagine the horror experienced by those who survived the events I want to help. Then I hear my government is going to do it for me and I think 'Great, I already gave....on April 15th.' Then I realize all over again that when the government does it one is never sure it will be done right."

FOUNDING WISDOM

"Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government."

SURVEY SAYS!

Should President Bush provide financial disaster aid to tsunami victims directly from the U.S. treasury...or make a public appeal for Americans to donate voluntarily to private relief efforts?

* Give the money from the government treasury
* Ask for voluntary, personal donations
* Huh?
