UN calls US response to tsunami disaster "stingy"
CNN Inside Politics | December 27, 2004 | CNN

Posted on 12/27/2004 2:04:39 PM PST by ejdrapes

I was watching CNN's Inside Politics today (no transcript up yet) and they had a panel on - someone from the Washington Post, LA Times (Ron Brownstein) and Time magazine (Karen Tumulty). They were discussing our response to the disaster and the host of the program mentioned that the UN called our response "stingy". Then the panel went on to talk about how we "fumbled" this and were basically AWOL for one day. This just really made my blood boil. What have other countries done? The Brits say over 10,000 of their citizens were on holiday in that area. It's a large tourist area for Europeans. Where's the criticism of the EU and its member nations? And do we really have to play politics at a time like this?

I travel to Phuket, Thailand several times a year. It is only a 1 hour and 15 minute flight from where I am.

About 95% of the tourists are from Europe.

The UN, who ignores genocide, calls our response stingy.

Laughable.

Well, then, why doesn't the UN just send some of their own money. Oh, that's right, I forgot, never mind...

When I see Kofi Annan head over to Sri Lanka, put on some rubber boots and work gloves, grab a shovel and actually exert a little effort in doing something for someone else (without any expectation that he or his son will profit from it), then I'll give a rat's patootey what the U.N. thinks.

The only "relief supplies" the Saudis send are Qurans and "religious teachers".

"generous" nations of the EU were giving $4 mill for the relief effort."

The United States should match this amount or the smallest donation of any of the middle eastern Muslim countries which every is less.

I saw this same news segment and threw my tortilla at the TV.
Indeed, the ENTIRE EUROPEAN UNION- with twice our population- pledged only 4 million dollars.
The US has pledged 15 million, the last I heard. We will probably pledge more, too.
When our communities have been leveled by hurricanes or earthquakes, when was the last time ANYBODY offered us assistance? REALLY?
When there has been a catastrophic calamity, when have we NOT offered ample assistance?
I want to tell these UN pricks exactly where they can stick it.

Stingy? Whenever there's a disaster anywhere in the world, Americans open their pocketbooks and checkbooks giving millions. But when there are earthquakes in California or hurricanes in Florida, do the people in other countries reciprocate?

Maybe the'd like to cough up some of the Oil-for-Fraud fortune for a little "humanitarian relief"?

Then again, maybe not.

Turncoats?? I don't think so it seems to me the back end of them is all we have ever seen of them from day one, no turning involved.
