Giant cockroach among jungle find

"A "monster" cockroach and other new insects have been discovered in the jungles of Borneo, scientists say. An expedition of caves and cliffs, led by the Nature Conservancy, also said it saw previously unknown fish and plants.

"In just five weeks, the expedition team discovered numerous new species previously unknown to science," the conservancy's Scott Stanley said.

"Who knows what else is out there?" he added, calling for the area surveyed in East Kalimantan to be preserved.

"If something is not done soon to protect these areas, dozens of species could disappear before anyone knew they ever existed."

Borneo is one of the world's richest regions, in terms of biodiversity, but the area had no special status that might have protected it against illegal mining or logging.

The team of scientists explored four "karst" systems of limestone caves, cliffs and sinkholes in the Sangkulirang Peninsula, about 1,200km (750 miles) north-west of Indonesia's capital, Jakarta.

At 10cm (4in) long, the newly-discovered cockroach is believed to be the largest in the world.

As well as the "monster" cockroach, the scientists reported a new "micro-crab", a pure-white 6.5cm-long millipede, two new species of begonia, two new species of snail and several new types of fish, the conservancy said."

So biodiversity=wealth??????

These environmental whackos just hate people, regardless of how poor they are---all in the name of environmental religion.

ELF is already engaging in the next crusade.

"If something is not done soon to protect these areas, dozens of species could disappear before anyone knew they ever existed."

Uh oh, this sounds like a new liberal ecoradical mantra. We are endangering things we don't even know exist. Now there is an ethic you can get your arms around.

That's an interesting thought. The disregard for human life in favor of rare species of insects, flora and fauna is apparent and disgusting.

Thanks but I wouldn't use your arms to hug the ethic or the bug. :-)

Yes, we must prevent the people who live in Borneo from sharing in modernity. We have to keep them in third world status by cutting them off from their assets and room for growth. We must send the family planners there to sterilize all the women and save pristine Borneo to be a theme park for future generations of environmentalists and Left Elite.

ROFL! Somehow I knew there'd be a comment like that from someone in Texas. Ya'll probably have to use a lasso on the bigger versions of the insect.

My first wife was deathly afraid of fying roaches, and called them "Aeroplane Bugs!"

Spray those with starting fluid or wasp-killer with petroleum distillates, and they will die quickly without running around too much. You can smash them, but if you miss they will either take off and fly right at you, or run off somewhere. Then will you have to hunt for them.

That's right out of Jurassic Park. Hmmmm, I wonder if this will be the source of a new Michael Crichton novel.
