FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) A small plane crashed Friday in the sparsely populated Everglades west of this city and a dive team was searching for survivors, officials said.
The single-engine Cessna 210 went down around 8 p.m. about 20 miles west of Fort Lauderdale, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen. Bergen and Broward County sheriffs officials didnt know how many people were on board or if they were hurt.
The plane took off from Orlando Executive Airport on its way to the Miami suburb of Opa-locka, she said.
Sheriffs deputies found the wreckage about a half mile south of Alligator Alley in the Everglades, spokesman Hugh Graf said.
At this point were all hopeful that well find survivors, Graf said.
Graf said the sheriffs office first received a call from someone on a cell phone who said he saw lights coming down from the sky. Ten minutes later, an air control tower told the sheriffs office that they had lost contact with the Cessna.
Is your AP versions off TBO?
I looked before dinner and couldn't find a url.
THANKS FOR THE UPDATES.

"Person questioned in probe of laser beams aimed at plane, helicopter"
By BRUCE SHIPKOWSKI

TRENTON, N.J. -- A laser beam was aimed at a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police helicopter Friday as the aircraft flew over an area where a similar incident occurred earlier this week. Officials later tracked the beam to a Morris County home and were questioning a person in connection with both incidents.
Samuel J. Plumeri Jr., the force's superintendent, and some detectives were in the helicopter when the beam hit it, said Steve Coleman, an authority spokesman. At that time, they were trying to pinpoint the location from where three green lasers were pointed at a pilot preparing to land a plane at Teterboro Airport on Wednesday night.
Shortly after the beam hit the helicopter, port authority and federal officials went to a Parsippany home and were questioning a person there, but no charges had been filed as of late Friday night, Coleman said."

New Year's Day, 2005
As we begin the New Year, our prayers go out to the people who have lost so much to the recent series of disasters in the Indian Ocean region. The past few days have brought loss and grief to the world that is beyond our comprehension. America will continue to stand with the affected governments to bring aid to those in need. Together the world will cope with the loss and prevail over this destruction.
In the United States, we go forward in the New Year with confidence and faith in the future.
Over the past year, Americans have shown resolve and patience in the war on terror. Our military men and women have brought justice to the enemy and honor to our country. Because of their bravery, over 50 million people in Iraq and Afghanistan are now free. At home, Americans have restored the vigor of our economy and answered the call to serve neighbors in need.
In the year ahead, we will persevere in the ongoing war on terror to make our Nation safer and stronger. We will continue to confront disease, hunger, and poverty at home and abroad. We will build on our economic progress and strengthen Social Security for the next generation so that all our citizens can realize the promise of America. And we will continue to improve our public schools and uphold our deepest values of faith, family, and service.
We are grateful to the men and women of our Armed Forces who serve and sacrifice to defend our liberty. These heroes and their families have the thanks and respect of our entire Nation. We pray for their safety and for peace and understanding throughout the world.
Laura joins me in sending our best wishes for a Happy New Year. May God bless you, and may God continue to bless America.

Happy New Year
We're taking down the streamers and emptying the punch bowls now that the ball has dropped here in the Jihad Watch offices in Secure Undisclosed Locationville, and we just received this message:
jewboy website i take it?
Well, no, but thanks for asking. I see that the new year has not brought any increased awareness on the part of jihadists and their allies of the kind of resistance they have inspired. In 2005 as in 2004, Jihad Watch will bring you news of the global jihad against Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, atheists, conservatives, liberals, secularists, etc. -- all the victims and potential victims of the Islamic jihad ideology.
May 2005 be a year in which public awareness of the true nature of the threat we face increases, and the response from government, law enforcement, and the media becomes more focused and effective.
