XCOR Congratulates President Bush - HR 5382 Becomes Law

XCOR Aerospace thanked and congratulated President Bush on signing HR 5382, "The Commercial Space Launch Amendments Act of 2004," into law today. This important bipartisan legislation updates the Commercial Space Launch Act and puts commercial human space flight on a clear legal foundation. The bill also takes other important steps to improve the regulatory environment and reduce investor uncertainty facing this new industry. HR 5382 will help harness the power of private enterprise to the task of making space travel affordable for all of us.

"Ultimately, we must give credit to the elected officials who put their reputations on the line to help pass this bill, especially Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY)," said XCOR CEO Jeff Greason. "They did not give up hope and worked tirelessly with their staffs to achieve passage. Senators Hollings (D-SC), Reid (D-NV), Inhofe (R-OK), Brownback (R-KS), McCain (R-AZ), and Feinstein (D-CA) all worked to help pass this legislation in the Senate. Our children will be grateful for their courageous action on behalf of the American people."

XCOR Aerospace is a California corporation located in Mojave, California. The company is in the business of developing and producing safe, reliable and reusable rocket engines and rocket powered vehicles.

Sounds to me like they just delayed the first interplanetary commercial flight by decades.
Who protects us from the bureaucrats?

No, they gave a green light to it, something that it didn't have under previous law. This was necessary legislation. XCOR is in the commercial human spaceflight business, and they lobbied heavily for this legislation.

This legislation has been needed for twenty years. Being freed from legislative shackles is something the private space industry has desperately needed to proceed. The legislation that was signed says that civilian passengers on private space vehicles, essentially, know they're doing something risky, and protects the companies from lawsuits while at the same time protecting people living downrange from the launch sites from things falling through their roofs and squashing them. A great example of good legislation; getting the government out of the way of entrepeneurs in a new field, while at the same time reasonably protecting the public. A terrific Christmas present for those of us who want to see space developed.

What did they restrict or regulate while passing this? Government NEVER gives away any "right" or "permission" without also restricting, controlling, limiting, or taxing it.

Either that or they established a department to over see or control the "permission". More government jobs on the way. Where will the building(s)or facilities be located? More tax dollars gone.

I would like to see the guts of the legislation before I give kudo's or congratulations. Sorry I am more than a bit jaded.
