I recall (imperfectly) that back in the 1960's there was a mortar attack on the UN Headquarters building.
I seem to recall that someone set up a mortar in Brooklyn and fired into the UN Headquarters building in Manhattan.
Am I alone im my recollection f this event, or can some freeper help me?
With all the attendant finger pointing regarding a mortar attack on a mess tent in Iraq, with the obligaroty hand wringing and witch hunt for the "responsible party", I would be interested to recall who the "responsible party" was when the UN was attacked all those years ago.
I had a friend who lived near the UN who was married in February 1978. Shortly after her marriage, the UN was bombed and their car was destroyed. They were not covered for acts of terrorism in their insurance and had to eat the new Mercedes they had bought as their first marital purchase. I thought it was a Palestinian or African group that did the deed, but, thankfully, time dims a memory.
At least it was called "bazooka" in the reports at the time. It may in fact have been an RPG, in retrospect.
Re the finger pointing:
I'm not a physicist, but if the Mosul attack was really a suicide bomber, and not a rocket attack, isn't it better that it happened in a tent, instead of in an enclosed steel and concrete bunker?
Good point! At least the blast and some of the shrapnel could escape through the point of least resistance.
Bazooka, RPG, mortar - Who cares? Let's just get started at it as soon as possible. Time's a-wastin'!
Blamed on Cubans.
I don't recall the attack on the U.N. but there was a machine gun attack on Congress which killed five Reps. It was carried out by Puerto Rican terrorists who were pardoned by Bill Clinton.

Possibly the rocket/mortar attempt to hit the UN was fired from an old pier in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
(not Queens County). If memory serves, it was a Puerto Rican dissident party. Look up Puerto R.
terrorist activiities to check out.
I worked in Greenpoint in the 60's and recall an attempt of this type.
That's my recollection as well ... for what it's worth. Vague on who, or why, the attack was launched.
Steve:
I wondered the same thing as long as two years ago. Today I found the answer.

....and a follow-up report on the arrest:
