Part of the hard work of civilization is teaching young to be able to distinguish between the good and the bad in all aspects of life. If we teach our young children to obey the 10 Commandments and to obey the laws of the land, but don't teach them to realize that Johann Sebastian Bach is superior to Dimebag Abbott, we have failed as parents and mentors. If a person has gone through 12 or 13 years of education and has not developed an appreciation for the greatest artistic achievements of mankind, that education has been an utter failure.

While laissez-faire is the correct approach to economics it has no place in the realm of aesthetics or morality. A confidant civilization imposes its morality and aesthetics on it young people. Yes, you heard it right. We impose. The Rousseauian noble savage is a myth. Left unchecked and untutored the savage will never attain nobility......

Grim's column is as offensive as it is childish. As in everything else he writes, Grim tries to portray himself as an elitist, but comes across as a hamhanded vulgarian, celebrating the violent death of a young musician by demonizing his audience. Grim's observations about popular cultural betray a profound ignorance of both people and cultural, and end up being merely nasty and brutish (but, unfortunately, not short). Indeed, if he knew anything at all about popular culture, he would not never have written, let alone tried to publicize, the lame screenplays he flogs on his website.

I wish to reply to your unbelievable comments regarding the death of Darrell Abbott. First of all, as a human being, what right do you have to say “good riddance” about the death of a person who had done nothing bad or hurtful towards you? I am a music student, and I have studied music for the past 14 years. I have background in both classical and popular music, I was in the choir at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle for six years and for three years at Eton College, where I was a music scholar. I have studied the piano, violin, viola and classical guitar to very high levels in the classical world, playing in various orchestras and performed all around the world, including two tours of the USA. I also play the drums, bass and electric guitar and I play many different styles of music from pop to metal. I know what I am talking about in terms of music.
I think what you fail to understand is that classical music, and by classical I mean composers such as JS Bach, is not the only form of music in existence that is well written, innovative and influential. I agree that there is a lot of rubbish popular music flying around, but this has always been the case throughout history, we just forget about them for obvious reasons. Bach was not the only composer of his time, there were hundreds, probably thousands of others, but they do not get remembered, because generally they were not very good. Bach is good, very good. Dimebag Darrell was also very good at what he did. He was a virtuoso performer and had studied his instrument and his craft for many years, he was constantly, as all good musicians are, trying to perfect his art. He is one of the most influential guitarists of our age, his writing and playing style influenced basically every popular metal band for the past five or six years.
I think that by saying good riddance and that children should be taught that Bach is superior to Darrell is preposterous, I think your own education is flawed and that you should learn to accept cultures and styles of music that you are not familiar with. I have spent my whole life in search of different types of music, and I have studied everything that I have come across. I do not like all of it at all, but I know what I do like and why I like it.
I am interested to hear what you have to say to my points and I would appreciate a reply by email.

It’s amazing what a twisted view some people have of Germany. I don’t think that living in Germany has anything to do with mr. Grim’s view of the world.

Anyway, the man obviously should do his research before he writes such an article. If I would write down all the wrong assumptions in this article, I would fill one full page on this forum.

I'm sure that Mr. Grimm would have much preferred the company of Dr. Joseph Mengele and Al Capone to that of Dimebag Darryl. Both are said to have loved classical music and opera.

good point -- D.A. was infinitely better than Bach on an electric guitar (considering that Bach never handled one in his life and they weren't invented until long after he was gone!). I think you can appreciate both Pantera and Classical music -- I, personally, can appreciate both speed/thrash metal and classical

Pantera’s guitaring definitely was among the best in the business, not quite in the league of van Halen, but pretty good, in a different style. That’s true about metal musicians appreciatign classical music — Symphony & Metallica comes to mind. Also, Dave Mustaine’s use of Classical sounds

I rather do -- remember that BAch, Mozart (in fact, more Mozart than Bach) were the rock stars of their day, writing music that pleased their audiences. You've probably heard of Buddy Holly and hummed La Bamba, never mind about various Elvis and Beatle songs. Or, what about Frank Sinatra (I did it my way) or Bing Crosby (white christmas)? Do you remember them? Well, I do, just like I remember Louis Armstrong, Yehudi Menuhin and Caruso (though I've never heard Caruso, I still know the name of one of the greatest tenors ever -- p.s. he lived inthe 19th century)

Good musicians will be remembered.
