Doctors: Yushchenko Poisoned With Dioxin

VIENNA, Austria - The mysterious illness of Ukrainian opposition leader and presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was caused by dioxin poisoning that was likely intentional, doctors said Saturday.

Yushchenko has accused Ukrainian authorities of trying to poison him in the runup to a presidential vote marred by fraud. Ukraine's Supreme Court voided the outcome of that vote, which Yushchenko lost to Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, and a rerun of the ballot is slated for Dec. 26.

Yushchenko first fell ill in September and was rushed to the Vienna hospital. He resumed campaigning later in the month but with a pockmarked and badly disfigured face.

He returned to the hospital later in September for further treatment and checked in for a third time Friday.

I wasn't trying to be personal -- it's just that they have these big headlines all over the place, but no names of the doctors are mentioned, and in the meantime, the doctors who actually treated him and the hospital where he was treated have announced that he was NOT poisoned.

I think these recent articles is just more of the media's attempt to whip up sympathy for Yushchenko and anger towards the other candidate, by making these claims, as facts.

The article from the BBC you posted says they will be doing tests, but the doctors did NOT say he was poisoned.

"Ukraine's opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko has gone into hospital in Austria for tests into the mystery illness that disfigured his face.

Doctors will spend the weekend examining him to assess whether his illness was caused by poisoning. "

VIENNA, Austria -- The disfiguring illness afflicting Ukraine opposition presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was caused by dioxin poisoning, a doctor at an Austrian hospital has said.

Blood and skin tests conducted over the past 24 hours in Austria and other European clinics provided the evidence, Rudolphinerhaus clinic director Dr. Michael Zimpfer told a news conference Saturday.

"There is no doubt about the fact that Mr. Yushchenko's disease has been caused by a case of poisoning by dioxin," Zimpfer said. (excerpt)

Those two doctors who retracted their earlier statements that he was poisoned were likely threatened, imo.

On other Yushchenko threads it is asserted that the denial of poisoning came actully from another source, not the actual doctors or clinic involved. The disclaimer of poison was supposedly entirely made up, a lie, to distract.

someone needs to check out this diagnosis, i think he has " Acute Intermittent Porphyria" It's a blood disorder that in some cases will resemble a photosensitivity of the skin. It will occur in a rapid fashion as well. He should have that checked. He could develop it secondary to a toxin.

FO: you're right that that BBC article doesn't have Dr Zimpfer's claim, but this BBC article does have the claim:

Ukraine candidate 'was poisoned'

The KGB is not out of service. It has merely changed its name(s) and administration.

The article I posted contained statements by the doctors and hospital who actually treated him.

Something is very fishy about this.

When he was being treated, back at the end of September, the doctors did the tests and treated him, and came out and said that he was NOT poisoned.

Now, two months later he goes back for more tests and they suddenly discover, that he was poisoned after all?

Were these doctors lying then, or are they lying now?

I tend to believe what they said the first time, when he was there to be diagnosed and treated.

Fair - Do you know if this claim is true?

"Yushchenko has accused Ukrainian authorities of trying to poison him "

Too bad, he was an exceptionally handsome and telegenic man.

Does anyone have any before and after pictures?

That's my point.

There is no way of knowing who is telling the truth.

Yushchenko has been saying all along, that he was poisoned -- but if he was suspicious about it all along, one would think he would have been taking extra precautions all along.

Then he goes in for diagnosis and treatment, the doctors do tests and treat him and say that he was NOT poisoned.

Then, two months later, shortly before the runoff elections, he goes in for more tests and now, the same doctors, who said categorically that he was not poisoned, say the opposite, that he was indeed poisoned.

Did Soros make a donation to the clinic and the retirement fund of the doctors?

If the Russians or whatever the KGB equivalent is today HAD poisoned him, he would NOT be alive and functioning.

This whole thing sound to me, like maybe he did get some disease, and is making political hay out of it, trying to smear his opponent.
