WORST HOLIDAY SONGS (Streisand at #4, just behind the "Jingle Bells" dogs)
NY Post ^ | December 7, 2004 | JOHN MAINELLI

EVER been driven up the chimney by a Christmas song that you really, really hate? New Jersey researchers have named the six worst Christmas songs of all time, as picked by holiday-music fans who were asked to rate more than 600 yule tunes.

The biggest lump of coal goes to "O Holy Night" as sung by the foul-mouthed Cartman from "South Park," according to Edison Media Research.

Close behind are Seymour Swine & the Squealers' butchered "Blue Christmas," "Jingle Bells" by The Singing Dogs and, separately, Barbra Streisand — and "12 Days of Guido Christmas" by the Ha Ya Doin' Boys.

"We play — very lightly — the Barbra Streisand version of 'Jingle Bells' because she's got a following in New York," says Jim Ryan, programmer of top-rated Lite FM (WLTW/106.7).

"People tend not to like it because it's a really fast, up-tempo version of 'Jingle Bells' — almost like she did it as a goof," Ryan told The Post.

WPLJ (95.5 FM) music director Tony Mascaro says his research turned up a sixth song that listeners can't stand: Elmo & Patsy's "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer."

XM Radio Channel 83 is playing all these cheesy songs.

Very Brady Christmas, followed by Bonanza cast Christmas, then a dog bark song, and cat song, and a bunch of other losers.

Some of them are funny though.

"...I'm sure I'm in a minority."

Perhaps, but you're not alone. I've never liked the Beatles, and never understood what all the hype was about. Maybe I'm just too young, but they've always sucked, IMHO.

When I think "worst" Christmas songs, John & Yoko come to mind immediately.

That was Yoko?

I thought Paul McCartney had a leg cramp!

Thank you so much. I'd managed to grow scar tissue over the synapses that held the Madonna abomination and the Chipmunks desecration, and have managed to avoid "Grandma Got Run Over" this year. Now the stuff is ringing through my head like rocks in a beercan.

It's repetition that does it, I think. There was a year when just one more version of "Little Drummer Boy" would have put me over the edge, but this year it's "Jingle Bell Rock" that has me reaching for my semiautomatic bazooka. If there's a mass mall slaying in northern Idaho I don't think any jury would convict me.

I think you mean "We Are the World". I never associated that as being a Christmas song, but our non-stop Christmas radio station has has been playing it alot.

Awesome. I'll have to send it home to the kids.

No, I'm not a sadist, we never taught them the Santa scam. Ain't nobody but mom and dad responsible for Christmas in our house.

Since we're kvetching, it's gotten to be such a cash cow for the poor suffering recording industry (losing $7 billion per year to criminal downloaders!) that brand new pop stars (now often called 'country singers' for some odd reason), put out an Xmas album the first year they're (the pop singers) come out of the assembly line and are introduced to the gullible public. And the old stars record their second and third Xmas albums as if they hadn't tortured us enough by their first record. Hurry hurry, get your Xmas albums by Gretchen Wilson and Big & Rich before they're dumped to the cutout bin!

Incidentally, Chris Isaak has his first Christmas album out this year, which is receiving positive reviews, and on which he returns to channeling Roy Orbison(Pretty Paper) and the King (Bloo Xmas).

Last year I downloaded every version of Sleigh Ride I could find and put them on the same CD.

Sadly, I was actually listening the other day and enjoying the different versions. Cool thing is that I put the disk on at a party and nobody notices that it's all the same song.

Here's one of the verses:

Carve the turkey turn the ball game on
Mix Margaritas when the eggnog's gone
Send somebody to the Quik-Pak store
We need some ice and an extension cord
A can of bean dip and some Diet Rite
A box of pampers , some Marlboro Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family

Grandma got run over by a reindeer, is cute. I find it humorous, but I can see why some people don't like it.

190+ posts and nobody has yet mentioned Red Sobine (sp?)

He reads to music the worlds most depressing Christmas story.

Synopsis: A very poor child from a broken home, who has been constanly told how worthless he is, tells Santa his story, asks Santa to ask Jesus if the boy can look in to heaven. And then the boy dies in Santa's lap...

No that's not it. That is another barf song. It goes something like "time of the year... we want you to join us...." I can't remember the rest. I was in a Toys R US the other day, and when I heard this song. I was just getting tortured. Oh it was painful..
