Christmas Under Siege: The Big Picture (O'Reilly is finally on the right side of something!)

Christmas Under Siege: The Big Picture

Tuesday, December 07, 2004

By Bill O'Reilly

Christmas under siege — the big picture. That is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo."

All over the country, Christmas is taking flak. In Denver this past weekend, no religious floats were permitted in the holiday parade there. In New York City, Mayor Bloomberg unveiled the holiday tree and no Christian Christmas symbols are allowed in the public schools. Federated Department Stores, [that's] Macy's, have done away with the Christmas greeting, "Merry Christmas."

Now, all of this anti-Christian stuff is absurd, and may even be a bias situation. But the real reason it's happening has little to do with Christmas and everything to do with organized religion.

Secular progressives realize that America as it is now will never approve of gay marriage, partial birth abortion, euthanasia, legalized drugs, income redistribution through taxation, and many other progressive visions because of religious opposition.

But if the secularists can destroy religion in the public arena, the brave new progressive world is a possibility. That's what happened in Canada.

Hey, what happened to my post!

I responded by saying that the world is full of Scrooges. He changed for the better and so can these kill joys. Merry Christmas y'all!

Oh, really? When was the last time you saw a column in the NY Times decrying the dismanteling of Christmas? How about on one of the networks--even Fox? I'm not an O'Reilly fan, and usually change the channel before he comes on--but give the guy some credit: he called this one right. As some have suggested, he could be the proverbial broken clock.

I am impressed. I really didn't think that O'Reilly could see what was happening. Now, if we could strip off the final veil and acknowledge that "progressives" really means communists then we'd be dealing with the truth.

Moral Absolutes Ping.

How can O'Reilly get it sometimes and be completely off other times (much of the time)?

He's right here. Except instead of the word "progressive" he should use "leftist".

Let me know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.

I'm sorry. But defending Christmas just isn't a big deal to me. You don't get any special credit for coming down against the ACLU, for crying out loud. No offense to you. I'm glad you appreciate it.

Did anyone notice that Bill kinda lost it a little bit at the end of the show? He was slurring, giggling and squinting. It was only the last five minutes, but it seemed like he suddenly got wasted!

I watch(ed) O'Reilly quite a bit and he has done numerous shows about the assault on Christmas. Plus he comes down on the ACLU quite a bit. Plus he seems to have nearly eliminated the purely salacious material he was quite fond of prior to the Iraqi war and the election (on air he told Naomi Wolf he did those bits for the ratings. Apparently he's found he can get the numbers without that stuff). I only half listened last night as he talked to John Meachem about his Newsweek "Jesus's birth" cover story. Meachem, professing to be a deeply-feeling Episcopalian, went on and on about faith and reason. It wasn't until this afternoon I learned the article basically quotes the Jesus Seminar: The War Against Christmas. I'm not sure if that was a failure of my listening skills or O'Reilly's interviewing skills.

Happy Chanuka!

I missed last night's show, but I gave the Newsweak issue a glance today--the article seems to want to bash all that we believe about Jesus' miraculous birth--but was too timid to come right out with it, or at least as much as they'd like. My impression was that they think all of us who believe the Christmas story are ignorant superstitious knuckle draggers. Well, fine, I think they're all a bunch of stuckup snobbish brutish louts.

The war on Christ began when His ministry did.

It is just a bit less overt now.
