SANNERVILLE, France (AFP) - Some 150 people, backed by D-day veterans, demonstrated against plans to build a garbage dump near a site of the 1944 allied landings.

The demonstrators, who included local politicians and former soldiers, waved banners demanding that the site, Maizeret, where parachutists and British commandos landed, be preserved as a "place of memory".
The association of veterans of the 46th Royal Marine Commando also expressed their concern in a letter to the regional governor, saying that as the recent 60th anniversary of D-day commemorations showed, thousands of Normandy veterans were still alive, and would be distraught at seeing a dump at a place where French and allied lives were lost in fighting Nazism.
Maizeret lies just outside Sannerville, which was evacuated of its civilian population and then totally destroyed in a massive bombing raid in July 1944 designed to assist a breakout from the landing beaches.
Freaking French.

Hey France, Pluck Yew! That's hallowed ground! Honor it!
just one more reason to hate france....the list is endless.
Freaking "journalists": "where parachutists and British commandos landed". Parachusists
generally don't land with tens of pounds of equipment, AAA bursting around them, "debris" falling on top of them,
at night, etc.
Just a leisurely night of skydiving.
Now, paratroopers, OTOH...

And it shows so well ;-)
Yea but in this case the demonstrators trying to save this site are also French... that a good thing
Nothing appears to be sacred with the French anymore.
Does anyone really expect any better from the French or are they mearly living down to peoples expectations.
