'Ocean's Twelve' Stars on 'Moral Values'

'Ocean's Twelve' Stars on 'Moral Values' Clooney, Damon, Pitt, Zeta-Jones and More on Hollywood vs. the Heartland Dec. 2, 2004 - In the new film "Ocean's Twelve," a variety of Hollywood A-listers play professionals, each with a special skill, who band together to pull off a gambit none of them could accomplish individually. The film might be seen as a metaphor for real life.

When movie stars come together, they're often recognized as a force to be reckoned with -- and not just at the box office. They're seen collectively as "the Hollywood liberal elite."

Six of "Ocean's" stars -- George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Andy Garcia and Don Cheadle -- recently sat down with ABC News' Diane Sawyer for an exclusive interview about family, fame and public perception.

After one of the most heated presidential campaigns in recent memory, Saywer asked them to reflect on the outcome, the importance of moral values and the idea they are on the opposite side of that dividing line.

"We are, in fact, at times defensive of the idea that there's this disconnect between us and the rest of the country," Clooney said.

"We are actually, all of us, conservative, not liberal, whatever … We are reflections of that society. And we're a product of it."

Movie stars who grew up in Middle American families are troubled by the idea that the country does not think they belong to them.

Pitt grew up in Missouri with an upbringing he describes as "Baptist and then a more nondenominational charismatic kind of movement."

So all actors are exactly who they play. Richard Dreyfuss played a conservative in that film and he is in fact quite liberal. What sort of logic is that?

What I'm waiting to hear from the Hollywood elite is a single good reason why their baseless political opinions should be given any greater consideration than that of my mail man?

For any other C/C++ language programmers out there:

Celebrity != Intelligence
Celebrity != Knowledge
Celebrity = max(SoapBoxSize)

Truthfully, I never really cared what actors thought or didn't think. I've known a bunch of them, successful, struggling and in-between, and I can tell you that acting and intelligence are mutually exclusive. They can "act" intelligent on talk shows, but it's just an act. That's not to say that I don't respect what they do, because it's a difficult job. However, I wouldn't listen to a word they say in regards to anything outside their profession.

If you want insight into any actor, imagine a very bright eighth grade student. Now, imagine that student pretending to be an adult and doing a pretty good job of it -- that's your basic actor.

These guys saw what just happened to Oliver Stone's latest boondoggle and are running scared that "red" America will wise up and boycott their films. Clooney et al are taking cover behind one or two moderates like Garcia because they don't want to set the table with an extra "turkey" this CHRISTmas.

"We are actually, all of us, conservative, not liberal, whatever...."

And this is the point where, literally, I scrolled back up to see if it was from Scrappleface or The Onion.

Hollywood personalities are not selected for their roles based upon intelligence. Only they think that once you have achieved stardom, you are also a genius. If you do not believe me, let me say one word: Cher.

Wait,wait -- I just thought of a better example. Do you know how people sometimes attribute intelligence to cats? In your heart of hearts, you know they're just dumb animals with brains the size of walnuts, but at times they act intelligent. That's your basic actor.

Again, this isn't meant as a slam against actors, but that's simply what they are, not terribly bright people capable of simulating intelligence.

Why do they consider themselves pundits, and why do the media imbeciles play along?

Because they and the media are one and the same: Vacuous empty shells getting paid to pretend for a living that they something better; or higher; or more interesting; or more intelligent; or more exciting than that which they are, in order to propagate an increase of federal reserve notes among the corporations that support them and cast them and make money advertising on their shows. Let the hypocrisy flow freely all the way down to US who tacitly wink and nod and still spend our money on the end product, or the products of its amoral sponsers, for without us, they would have no increase in FRNs.
There is plenty of guilt for everyone, and we deserve it.

Back in the 80s, Michael Douglas traveled to Nicaragua and chummed around with tin-pot Communist dictator Daniel Ortega for his jollies. Enough said.

These plastic Hollywood types should read a little bit more about Elia Kazan and the Hollywood left.

That's a good point Not to say there aren't intelligent actors but I remember watching Brando on Larry King about 10 years ago and he sounded like a complete imbecile. This is possibly the greatest actor of all time. The high point was where he corrected King's correct quote of Coleridge (a suspension of disbelief) with his own incorrect one (a suspension of belief).

In ten to twenty years most people well ask "who?" when you will read the names of these actors.

Technology is making them obsolite, most of Sky Captain was computer generated as was Polar Express and some of the biggest movies lately was animated ones such as The Incredibles or Shrek.

Why pay Cloony 20 million dollars to make a movie if the technology becomes cheap enough to create an actor without all the problems and egos of current hollywood.

The Movie Studios isn't sending out Golum from Lord of the Rings or Homer Simpson to support stupid political causes or get arrested for drug abuse and they never get old or unable to work. Lord of the Rings might be the last big real actor movie success if trends continue.

Asked why they thought so many actors were Democrats, Clooney responded rhetorically, "Why are so many African-Americans Democrats? I think it has to do with tolerance."

What a pat, simplistic and BS retort. George Clooney must not know the meaning of the word tolerance. And, as history tells us, the Republicans were the ones who worked against slavery.
