Laurie Squirrell Breaks Her Back Practicing for WMA Cup

Laurie Squirrell, 16, the first female in England to be awarded expert status in motocross, broke her back in a high-speed crash as she practiced for her first professional race at Cycle Ranch MX in Texas. Laurie is said to have hit a wet patch where her bike flipped and hit her on the head and then did another flip on to her back.

Laurie, who raced 125cc bikes, had taken a year out of studying to pursue her motocross career and was at the start of her “dream trip” to the USA.

Her doctor states she has a one in a million chance of walking again. We sure hope she beats the odds to walk and ride again.

Bless her heart. Prayers for her recovery if that's what God wills, or otherwise for her ability to be able to cope with her situation.

Something does not sound right. A doctor may have said it was only a one in one million chance to walk again if it was a complete break in the spinal cord. But it is surprising that this type of MX accident would cause that type of spinal injury rather than just a brused cord with crushed vertibrae.
In any case, I pray she'll have great strength in recovery and a long life.

I took some nasty spills when I was young and rode a dirt bike. Luckily I was never injured.

My wife broke her back a little over 10 years ago and fully recovered other than expected pain and back issues.

Racing is a cruel sport. I followed F1 in the 60's and about half the drivers of that era died in crashes: Jimmy Clark, Jochen Rindt, McLaren, Bonnier, Spence, Bandini, Revson, Siffert, Courage, Mitter, Scarfiotti, von Trips, Cevert, Rodriguez (both Pedro and Ricardo), de Beaufort, Schlesser - you could fill a whole grid.

That was umbilical cord stem cells from a fully developed, delivered and live baby, not embryonic. Actually, thousands of people have been helped with adult and umbilical stem cells. Not even lab rats have had any help from embryonic stem cells. If there were any hope of cures through embryonic stem cells, private companies would be lining up to do research as billions of dollars would be there for the taking.

Hopefully, she makes a complete physical & emotional recovery.

If it were easy & safe, everybody would become champions. The riders & racers who are the best are the ones who can find the "line" of wrecking without crossing too far over it. It's real easy to be fast and crash, but to win, you have to be Jeremy McGrath fast and not crash. It takes one in a million kind of skill.

Yes I heard that on the radio about two days ago, however they say they used stem cells from an umbilical cord.
