There are Titanium Oxides in the ink, and pure Titanium Oxides for use in inks and paints are modern products, but crude Titanium Oxides abound in nature and their presence does not prove the ink or the map to be forgeries.

The titanium dioxide was in a thinner line drawn over fainter organic ink lines. Thus there is a possibility that the lines were drawn over again much later because the original ones were fading away. Also, some other maps, thought authentic, do contain titanium dioxide. Finally, there is good evidence that Chinese junks visited North America circa 1421.

Actually, the begining of the article says: "Some people believe it is evidence that Vikings, who departed from Greenland around the year 1000, were the first to land in the Americas."

I believe that's where the five centuries comes in.

Look, Gore was a clod, but this whole "I invented the Internet thing" never really happened. He said he took initiative in the creation of the Internet -- characteristic overstatement, but at least a little true in the sense that he played a leading role in passing the supercomputing bill. I mean, sure, there are all sorts of things to criticize him on -- his policy positions above all else -- but I just find the distortions annoying.

Actually, if you sailed by way of Iceland, Greenland and Baffin Island you would only have been out of the sight of land for 2 days. Plus, the Vikings would have made their voyages in the summer time and at those latitudes the sun shines for most of the day. Not really a mystery given the ships the Vikings had. What they didn't have was weaponry that was sufficiently advanced to fight off continued and determined attacks by the unfriendly natives. That is probably why their North American settlements failed. They also may well have been assimilated into the native population, much the same happened in Ireland.
