SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AFP) - Arab League chief Amr Mussa called for a ceasefire in Iraq (news - web sites) and the holding of a national reconciliation conference before the country's planned January elections.
In a speech to delegates at an international conference on Iraq in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the secretary general called for a "ceasefire in Fallujah and the other hotspots" around the country.
With the US-backed interim government in Iraq having pledged to retake control of Sunni rebel cities before elections on January 30, the US military on November 8 mounted an offensive on the city of Fallujah, west of Baghdad.
Some 1,200 rebels were killed in the assault, according to the military.
Mussa stressed "the vital importance of launching an Iraqi reconciliation process", in the speech at a closed-door meeting, a copy of which was obtained by AFP.
He called for "an Iraqi conference which gathers all the parties in the countries before the elections, to give more support (to the polls) and contribute to their success".
Sounds kind of like "Time out! We're losing!", but I may just be too skeptical.
No.
we know how that worked out for the Israelis.
Bingooooooo
Seems to me that when these idiots call for a ceasefire, it's because their terrorist pals are losing and need a chance to regroup and rearm.
These people always want a cease fire when they are getting their arses kicked.
Link?
Hmmm and just when we are winning.
I think you're on to something.
It appears that everyone else is on to the game as well.
I trust this is the same Arab League that wants the democratic elections in Iraq to be delayed. Allawi's response, I hope: Pound sand and enjoy your power while you have it. Freedom is coming to the Middle East....
Yeah, sure. As soon as the, ahem, insurgents, stop we'll stop.
Oh wait, that's been the plan all along. They stop fighting and run their country so we can leave. Idiots.
Just keep killing the bastards. Don't stop.
Exactly: they're getting their butts kicked, so now they're spreading leftover Oil-For-Tyranny money around amongst whore Arab diplomats and journalists trying to buy outside intervention.
Count me in for the same realistic skepticism. If we don't continue to press them, we are fools.
