Duck, Microsoft: Firefox Is Coming To Retail Stores (Linux offering OpenOffice & Firefox together)

Linux operating-system producer Linspire Inc. has found another way to challenge Microsoft: it's offering its OpenOffice.org product suite and the Mozilla Foundation's Firefox browser in a single package in retail channels.

Linspire, formerly called Lindows, positions its OOoFf package to directly compete with Microsoft Office. The OpenOffice.org product enables users to create spreadsheets, presentations, and documents using files in popular formats, including .doc, .xls and .ppt. The Linspire product also enables users to utilize the PDF format.

"Our goal with OOoFf is to help get OpenOffice.org and Firefox into every possible distribution channel," said Linspire CEO Michael Robertson in a statement Monday. "As users grow comfortable with these high-quality open-source products, it makes the migration to desktop Linux a much more practical transition."

The combo OOoFf consists of an installation CD-ROM, documentation materials, and Flash tutorials. The software is compatible with Windows 98 and higher and Mac OS X 10.2 and higher.

Firefox has been downloaded by more than 10 million users, and the browser has taken some market share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The Linspire Linux-based operating system has been designed for desktop and laptop computers, and the firm said the new Firefox- OOoFf package should help spur the growth of its Linux operating system.

Plug-in isn't a evolution. Plug-in has been there since Windows 3.11. Nothing new.

I have popup blocking enabled. It's a checkbox. and it will doesn't block some drudgereport.com popups.

No Body uses them. No body. not IBM, SAP, Microsoft, Corel.. ect... no body uses them. I don't know any corporation who uses LXRAD, PerlQt, ect... the fact that I never heard of those names proves that no body uses them.

there is no "new" in browser technologies. Name one? Firefox has not added anything new that hasn't been implemented by others.

Tab browser isn't a significant advancement. It's a simple programming technique.
And the wheel wasn't a significant advancement, it was just simple transportation technique.

The significance of an advancement is measured by the effect it has, not how difficult it is to implement.

firefox will block majority of pop ups but some pop ups will escape the popup block features in firefox. believe me, i wanted firefox to block them but it didn't. I was really disappointed. I use firefox but not as much anymore since it doesn't block all the popup features.

Well, then you're just silly. In fact, I'm inclined to say you are making it up. How silly is it to say that you "don't go to drudgereport.com" with it because of a popup? Are popups really that scary?
In case you haven't noticed, everyone else in this thread who uses Firefox has no problem with it blocking popups @ drudge.

under advanced java options disable the ability of scripts to open unwanted windows, resize them and change focus... that is a different kind of popup mechanism that drudge uses.

clear the check boxes and the problem is gone.
remember there are several kinds of popups.

at some point you probably enabled advanced javascript settings... and forgot to turn it back off afterwords, the default setting is to not allow advanced javascript functions.

No, the point of the GUI is to make things simple for the end user, which fatefully criples your ability to do anything interesting.

What if you have 1000 jpegs you want to convert into gifs? In windows, you would be clicking 5000 times. Yay for "convenience"! In linux, you would just do

You criticized OpenOffice earlier because you said it can't do all that Microsoft Office can. Well, Windows can't do 10% of what Linux can.

You obviously don't do much interesting... I personally have stopped using the menus because they are too much of a hassle. I have a commandline in my panel and I can open any app with a few keystrokes--much less of a hastle than navigating through menu folders searching for the right entry.

Granted, 'ideablitz' sounds like he works for one of Microsoft's overseas sales divisions, but Firefox is a little susceptible to popups. It does stop the popup on Drudge and most others, but a few slip through.

Actually, the killer browser would be Opera, if only they could break themselves of the habit of offsetting one feature that doesn't work by introducing another feature that also doesn't work.

It's been a long time since I did any serious programming, but I think it wouldn't take much to write a better office suite than the MS Office Suite. It is a piece of klugy crap.

Corel Office Suite is an excellent utilitarian product.

IMO, Netscape 7.2 is a superior product...fast and utilitarian, it blocks all popups.

I dual boot a WinXP machine with SuSE 9.0 (well it also has QNX and BeOS on it), and I've got all that stuff, OO, Firefox, etc. And if you have an Nvidia card, you can play at least some decent 3D games.

I also put SuSE 9.1 personal on my laptop.

I think the best browser tho for blocking pop-ups is Opera. Uses far less resoures than IE or Firefox.

Mozilla people need to clean up their firefox code and deliver a couple more minor versions before they start more talk about taking on Microsoft.
