President Bush stepped into the middle of a confrontation and pulled his lead Secret Service agent away from Chilean security officials who barred his bodyguards from entering an elegant dinner for 21 world leaders Saturday night.

Several Chilean and American agents got into a pushing and shoving match outside the cultural center where the dinner was held. Bush noticed the fracas after posing for pictures on a red carpet with the summit host, Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and his wife and first lady Laura Bush.

That's a good point. You can't take anything for granted, and with the POTUS you can't be too careful.

I don't think you need to be a secret service agent to understand that the President is safer with his secret service detail following him into the area he was going into? But you don't have to take my word for it. You take the word of the secret service agent that was trying to follow the President into the area and was prevented from doing his job by the Chileans. You can also take the word of the President who went back out to make sure that he was followed into the area by his secret service escort. Given that, I think your last post is ridiculous, particularly since it is so clearly belied by the actions of both the secret service AND the President. Finally, you seem to be giving the benefit of the doubt to the Chileans and assuming that our secret service people were the ones who miscommunicated with the Chileans. Why is that?

Here is your post from #728:"But, if you look, now the thread is turning bitter that Bush is traveling, that his SS detail failed etc. It's just like clockwork here.

Here is your post to Choose Ye This Day at #860:

I subscribe to your take.

Here is the latest CYTD remark:

"If the dimplomatic protocol was going to put W in danger, then the President shouldn't have been there."

Care to comment?

You don't know hockey.

LOL. Okay. Under the new rules, the two defensemen can't come into the fray anymore. So, let's amend that to a scrum of 8 players in the crease after a puck is frozen. Good enough for you Coach Bowman?

The fact that he addressed the Chilean guards in spanish no doubt helped cool out the situation

yep, it looks to me like that SS agent had not only a right to enter and accompany Bush, but for some reason he absolutely had to accompany Bush. I'm sure we will never know the reason he must accompany the Bush, but I am satisfied that he must, and I am satisfied that the chileans knew this.

There is no way the SS would have forgotten to inform the chileans that this guy stays with the pres at all times.

There used to be a guy in military uniform who carried the "nuclear football" and was always close to the pres. Maybe this guy is of equal importance for reasons we will probably never know.

Problem is that too many of these two bit Tin Horn underlings have been reading and watching too many United States Liberal media comments about how the world is supposed to hate President Bush and the USA. Most South American countries get CNN International and PBS on cable in Spanish. CNN International trashes the United States more than Al Jezera or most other Arab stations. CNNI got so bad in the city where I lived that the local American chamber of commerce asked that they be taken off the air.

My relatives in South America in spite of what the liberal media says at least respects George W Bush for having strength. Lot more than I can say about Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton.

I presume you are referring to the instigator rule which has nothing to do with defensemen, but with the fact that a 3rd player inserting himself in a fight or skirmish is immediately given a game misconduct. So by the time there are 8 guys fighting you have a good old fashionned brawl. However this is not the place to discuss hockey, and if you want to post on hockey I'll be happy to join the discussion and answer any questions you may have about the sport.

Wrong again. I'm referring to the rule where a penalty is assigned to the two defensemen of the team in the opposition zone who skate into any after whistle gathering in the offensive zone. That's what I'm referring to, if you ever get a chance to actually watch NHL hockey again. By the way, I'm also referring by "scrum" to the usual pushing and shoving and trash talking that happens 10 times a game during the playoffs, not a dropped-glove line brawl that never happens any more.

So in your opninion the NHL allows one team to have 2 more players in their zone after the whistle, what if everybody was already in the zone at the time of the whitle. There is no such rule.

The woman in red is on the President's detail. I remember seeing her in photos from the election campaign.

Reading through the posts, the most likely scenario is this.

As the President arrives, the outside team handles security while a team waits inside. The President is to be accompanied into the building only by the head agent. As they head inside, the agent is blocked by Chilean security.

President goes out to retrieve the head of his detail.

Having dealt with the secret service on several occasions, they are consummate professionals. Whatever happened was the fault of the Chileans, no question.

I am a deep undercover Chilean spy, sent here to observe nefarious American right-wing Internet people, to learn of their ways. Thanks for blowing my cover.

If you would read all my posts, you would see that I do NOT simply give the benefit of the doubt to the Chilenos--see post 873, for example. I'm saying we don't know exactly what happened.

I'm going by what was reported in the Chilean news article I posted earlier, and by what the reporters were saying during the video, that there was one entrance for leaders, and another for everyone else, and that the security was arranged and agreed upon ahead of time. Right now, all we have are Chilean versions of the story; no details are coming out on our side of the story.

You're right. The President thought that agent should be allowed to come through. Fine. Did W go bring the agent through because he was supposed to always be by the President's side? Or, did he bring him in in order to defuse the altercation in the doorway? I DON'T KNOW. Neither do you.

Frankly, I'm tired of dicussing this, and I'm just plain tired. Time for bed. There was a screw up, I'm not sure if the President was put in any danger, and I hope not. As FairOpinion said, I hope nothing like this ever happens again.

Good night all.
