It was Osama's fault! That's the claim being made by former Democratic presidential contender John Kerry, who said that Osama bin Laden's bombastic pre-election video was responsible for his loss to President Bush.
Kerry made the claim during a chance encounter on Thursday with Fox News Channel's Geraldo Rivera in a holding room prior to the processional leading up to the formal opening of the Clinton presidential library in Little Rock, Ark.
Rivera said he told Kerry, "Tough luck, senator," when their paths initially crossed, referring to his election loss.
He said Kerry responded, to the best of his recollection, "It was the Osama tape it scared [the voters]." Kerry added that the tape came out too late for his campaign team to counteract its impact before the election, Rivera recalled.
Former President Bill Clinton, in a recent speech assessing the election outcome, also said he believed Kerry was hurt by the Osama tape.
Kerry's office did not return calls seeking comment yesterday.

While not wholly responsible for the Bush win, the tape certanly helped.
And let's not forget that sack of partisan swill, Walter Cronkite. Kerry, Castro, Cronkite -- a team that hopefully will still be alive for the 2008 elections, but will probably be two-thirds dead (and 100 per cent brain dead).
I happen to agree. The minute bin Laden said that it would make no difference if Kerry were elected, he's still gunning for us, I figured Bush gained about 1 or maybe 2 percentages.
America has a long tradition of keeping the "devil we know" in favor of "the devil we don't".
No, I don't believe this. Somebody messed with the byline.

Oh yes. He's for real. Check him out on Google.
Yeah, I'm surprised that sKerry got as many votes as he did...
I mean, how can 57 million people...be so dumb???
;^D
That's beautiful, SpyGuy. Thanks! : )
Just because Terrorists for Kerry were influential
heh, heh... funny sKerry excuse list, spy!
...and if this were a multiple choice test?
sKerrry knows the real answer is: *none of the above*.
Actually, a survey done after the tape (posted somewhere here on FR) said that most voters who claimed they had been influenced by the tape had decided to vote for Kerry, because they thought he could "negotiate" with Binnie.
My first thought when I saw the tape and the relatively conciliatory tone of Binnie was that it was going to assure a Kerry win, because he was offering the sham Islamic truce (hudna) if Bush was not elected.
The press tried to censor it because they didn't want it to look as if Binnie supported their boy, but the threats to the "states" (as in US states, not nations) that supported Bush came out in time to make it clear that Binnie was supporting Kerry.
I think it was a wash. Cowards still voted for Kerry, and people who were PO'd still voted for Bush.
The other side of the coin is that with all our effort and billions of dollars put into getting Bin Laden, he is still out there and lecturing us. Some would interpret that as maybe we need a new Sheriff. Tom.
de-nile is not just a river in Egypt.
He should blame Teresa for hitting him the head to many times....I'm going wind surfing.....
"Kerry lost because he sucked as a candidate, vascillated on issues, chose a preening pretty-boy as his running mate, and was a condescending, elitist prick with a neurotic wife."
Actually, I thought of him as more of an elitist, condescending prick.
"Kerry should go get his hunting rifle and kill OBL right away."
Don't you mean his "trusty, 12 guage, double barrel"? He could crawl around the world on his belly, now that's huntin'.
"FREDRIC U. DICKER"
I don't know about this one but I used to see news references to a local business manager named "Dick Puffer", yep, that's for real folks.
Pretty face but I would have my daughter to the doctor with those skinny bony arms. She probably clanks when she moves.
That is HILARIOUS!!!!!!!
I have to disagree... Kerri Russell is HOT! :P
