"UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN employees are expected to issue an unprecedented vote of no confidence in Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites), union sources say, after he pardoned the body's top oversight official over a series of allegations.
The UN staff union, in what officials said was the first vote of its kind in the more than 50-year history of the United Nations (news - web sites), was set to approve a resolution withdrawing support for the embattled Annan and senior UN management.
Annan has been in the line of fire over a high-profile series of scandals including controversy about a UN aid programme that investigators say allowed deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) to embezzle billions of dollars.
Staffers said the trigger for the no-confidence measure was an announcement this week that Annan had pardoned the UN's top oversight official, who was facing allegations of favouritism and sexual harassment."

It would be nice to see the current gang at the top of the UN exposed for the criminals they are, but I doubt the new leadership will be any improvement.

This is too funny. A vote of no confidence sounds like it will hold as much water as a resolution. I'm thinking this will be more of a "I have no confidence in you.... carry on." than anything else.
In the UN's bizarro world this might have some meaning. Only at the UN do Resolutions carry more weight than real force. In the UN unfree,undemocratic countries get to democractically vote against free, democratic countries. I think I have joined UN bizarro world, because for the firsttime I might actually agree with a union action. huh

Hmmm, other than the fact the the Africans will probably cry racism for getting rid of yet
another corrupt Secretary-General that happens to be from Africa...
the powers that be might go for it in order to ignore Japan's lobbying for a seat on the
permanent Security Council.
