KEYWORDS:
1997 when then President Bill Clinton announced the American Heritage Rivers Initiative. This Presidential Proclamation which many lawmakers called unconstitutional brought 10 of America’s major rivers under Federal control and was later expanded to 14. Many saw this move by the President as a way for his administration to expedite the provisions of the 1992 United Nations Convention of Biological Diversity Treaty which the United States Senate refused to ratify. Seeing that this former President just opened up hi new LIE-brary; I am looking for some more information & discussion on this issue. DOes anyone have more information and its repurcussions? This former President was seizing control over one source of our Nations prosperity —our rivers.

I thought the Dems could not possibly nominate a more repulsive, vile and morally bereft candidate than Clinton. Then they nominated Kerry.

I used to think the world could not possibly nominate a more incompetent dolt, a bigger America-hater, and a stronger advocate for antisemitism than Kofi Friday...

From the "For What It's Worth" department....It's been awhile, but if memory serves me this initiative gives the federal government control over such things as construction allowed along the river itself, population density...and, possibly more importantly, it gives the government control over feeder streams/creeks, run-offs, as well as associated wetlands. This initiative has impact upon commerce and agriculture. In my opinion, it's a bad idea.

American Heritage Rivers Initiative

I remember it was hotly debated in letters to the editors of the Florida Times-Union ( Jacksonville ) at the time. The cons seemed worried about the loss of freedom, while the pros seemed to think all sorts of Federal benefits would flow their way. It was certainly contentious.

Yes, it's amazing what's in the FR archives.

No doubt it was contentious, but I don't recall a lot about this story.
I got engaged in early 1997 and was otherwise occupied. :)

Ah! The old Man & a Maid stuff... well, that's certainly more enjoyable than dusty politics.

I was still 2 years away from having web access- DOS 3.3 on a 486 based, 66mhtz machine.

I recall that the idiot Clinton asked that communities across Amereica submit rivers for designation as an American Heritage River.

Local nitwit politicians, and their eco-fascist masters, submitted a list to the slimeball in the whitehouse. (I forgot which left wing jackass was running this federal scam.)

Anyway, several rivers were designated as American Heritage Rivers. I believe the Detroit River was one. Naturally, private landowners along the rivers were never consulted - typical of the arrogant fascists infesting the Clinton whorehouse.

The whole damn thing was an illegal theft of private property, because federal regulations on federal land always seems to spill over onto private property. It was about control, and creating de facto government nature preserves on private property without paying compensation.

Clinton, in my book, was the biggest land thief since Lenin.

They ought to fly the UN flag at the library; that's where his true allegiance lay.

If either Clinton gets a chance at the U.N. they will make Whitewater look like a Sunday School picnic and the Oil For Food scandal will no longer be the world's largest case of embezzlement. Either Clinton would end up owning the whole d*mn world if they could.
