Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (what do you think about the sucess of the "murder game"?)
TIMESDISPATCH.com ^ | 4/11/2004 | Doug Elfman

This time, the blood spills in "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," which looks, feels and sounds a lot like its predecessors. That means you pull off drive-bys and other hard-core criminal goals, while killing cops, prostitutes and hundreds of innocent victims on the side. Some people complain that the game could desensitize children to murderous images. But it's rated M for Mature. Kids aren't supposed to have access to it, even though we know that many will. [...] There's sex in "San Andreas," as there was in "Grand Theft Auto III." For a small amount of money, you can pick up hookers and drive them behind a bush. The car rocks. Talk is exchanged. [...] The game is smart like that, but the characters aren't. The one thing I can't make happen is intellectual reflection. Characters point guns. Characters kill one another other. Not one stops to think.

I think everyone here played cops and robbers as kids... I wonder what everyone thinks of that murder game

The way I remember it, there was a lot of death but, never any gore, and rarely if ever any objectionable language. "Army" was very similar in both regards.

The experience was very UNrealistic.

I didn't hear it. Most of the chatter from the aliens is along the lines of "he'll kill us all!"

It could be there, but I had other things going on... like trying not to get killed ;-)...

When I was a kid we pointed cap guns at each and argued when our buddies refused to fall down, usually ending up in a minor scuffle that put us both on the ground. Shooting cap guns didn't turn me into a bank robbing horse thief any more than these games turn kids into cop killers. It's modern cops and robbers.

Despite what some may say, I still think the Colt replica cap gun I played with, holding it in my hand, looking through the sights, was a lot more realistic than pushing buttons to make a cartoon move. And most of us turned out just fine.

Tell me....what conservative principle are you espousing when you say that video game producers can't market a certain type of game because it, and not the person, is actually responsible for the actions of said person.

I'm still waiting for it to come on PC (June, they're making us wait until June, luckily there's a Doom 3 expansion that should tide me over), but I'm guessing I'll thurougly enjoy it. The previous two were great driving sims, and the soundtrack for Vice City was great (actually I listen to them out in the real world, especially V-Rock).

Doom 3 was great, until HL2 came out. That put all others to shame.

It's the all mighty conservative principle of "Pass the buck". We can't be responsible for our own actions. </sarcasm>

I think they're taking too long to come out with the PC version.

I never got into Halo. Looks good but you can't play all the first person shooters. Also I'm cheap, just recently picked up Doom3, it's rare for me to spend more than $40 on a game.

Who said anything about Halo2? FPS on consoles = teh suxors. I'm talking about the game dubbed by PC Gamer magazine as the "Best game EVER". The one, the only, the undisputed Half Life 2.

Vice City is great. I played it for a week, mowing people down, trying to see how many stars I could get, before I actually tried to complete the game. (Still working on it.)

"...Unless of course it's up to him to decide what I spend my $$ on, that I legally earned, and buying a legal product, that I then enjoy in my own home."

I haven't played the game, so I don't have an opinion of how 'dangerous' it might be to the public.

But, with all due respect, your argument begs the question of whether it *should* be legal.

Didn't look like my kind of game. Still doesn't, though I'm still not sure just what type of game it is. There are a lot of great games out there I have no intention of ever playing because their genre bores me to tears, like all Civilization clones.

Almost same storyline as D3. aliens taking over, gotta kill em... but instead of a mars base, your fighting on earth, through city streets, ect. and you have a whole team that fights next to you at parts.
