"Well within the bounds of LONG historical precedent of editorial cartoon"

I'd like to see how a MLK or Malcolm X cartoon with giant protruding lips would go over today.

How do you know Rice didn't GIVE Bush his agenda, huh? Punish France, Ignore Germany, Forgive Russia, Nuke anybody else that gets in our way. (the last bit mine.)

Well now, looks like Oliphant is a racist. Who would have guessed?

Not racist. Well within the bounds of LONG historical precedent of editorial cartoon.

I mostly agree with you. I think what people are upset about is the depiction of Condi having, stereotypically black, large lips. In fact, she does not have large lips at all.

That feature was unnecessary. The rest of it is fine with me. I see no sexism at all and I think the complaints about the dialogue are reaching.

The oversize lips and big teeth are a standard racist cliche. Probably the idea of Rice as Bush's sycophant should have been played down, rather than played up, given all of the caricatures of African-Americans as docile and obsequious servants down through the years.

The question is, how many papers ran this cartoon. What kind of a reaction will they get from the readers, and how will they respond in turn? Knowing which papers run the cartoon may tell you something about what their editors are like.

The Danziger cartoon "I don't know nuthin' about" IS rascist -- and that Gone with Wind movie scene analogy just makes it more so.

Cannot believe that someone called in to Neal Boortz show and said Condi got where she is, by sleeping around. Good grief where are the brains of these people?? Thank God we have GW and Condi.

No, this is just tasteless and about as funny as a kidney stone. Now the one Jeff Danziger did, the one where she's supposed to be the maid from "Gone With The Wind"...that was racist.

It puts women down,

How on earth does this cartoon put "women" down? She DOES work for the President, she is going to do as he asks.

You ever looked at a book, newspaper, anything? Ever see the caricature's or cartoons of sports figures? Rap artist etc?

The line between funny and offensive is where the picture acentuates features that she does not possess...she does not have protruding lips.... Satire must contain elements of truth. Oliphant seems to be exagerating features of the rap artist you mention....not Condi.

Bare foot, buck teethed, servile projections are common among racists.

NO LIBERAL OR CONSERVATVE WOULD EVER DRAW A LIBERAL WITH BUCK TEETH AS THEY UNDERSTAND THE STEROTYPE!

Sickening people are pretending ignorance of what buckteeth & mindless adorative rejoinder is meant to denote in Condi's circumstance. They knew what they were doing, and it wasn't meant as benign political commentary and harmless facial exageration.

Okay I did, I had already done so. I was thinking back to the 1700's -- Hogarth, and the Tammany Hall-type stuff from the 1800's.

"Vile" is the word for it, alright. But, see, this is OK because this is a liberal being vile to a conservative. We conservatives must not question liberal blacks, or we are racist and discriminatory. To be racist about conservative blacks is acceptable, even admirable. Different rules for different people. See?

This is where we blow off steam and refine our complaints and ideas.

It's a powerful tool.
