I think it's time to dump Israel. Too bad Johnson turned those planes around in '67.

Several military sources, acknowledging that they did not have sufficient evidence, suggested that the intruding vessel was a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine. They ruled out the possibility that the submarine belonged to Iran or an Arab or Soviet-bloc navy. The sources said this was not the first time a foreign submarine had entered Israeli territorial waters on an espionage operation. They appeared to rule out the prospect that the submarine had wandered into Israeli territorial waters by accident.

What total horse shit! It is impossible to indentify the nationality of a submerged submarine without having collected acoustic and other information.

Real ASW

If we had attacked the submarine, dozens of American or French sailors would have died unnecessarily. We chose not to destroy the submarine, but rather to chase it away."
---

Why did they phrase it like that? Perahps to implicate the French?

This story smells bogus. The US and Israel are allies. If a US surface ship entered Israeli waters it would be welcomed. Why would Israel chase off a submarine if they thought it might be American? It doesn't make sense.

Also there are too many "unnamed sources" in the story. A legitimate news story lists the names of people who supply information.

Submarine periscopes have radio antennas inside, FYI.

You answered your own questions. We should end all foreign aid and withdraw from the UN, for starters. NATO should be next.

At this point, I honestly think that everyone can go to hell and the rest of the world can go FCC themselves!

The sources said the submarine sought to conduct reconnaissance of Israel's vital facilities.

It is more likely that we were simply testing how stealthy the subs could be knowing that the Israelis miss little.
Personally, I believe that Israel spies against us and we against them. That is the way it ought to be. I'm sure we spy against the Bristish too.

"How do you like this line of crap from Israel? If we wanted any information on something within that country I would think we could just ask them - without having to get a sub close to shore."

Somewhat more than I like the line of crap from you, actually.

What would they have to gain by blaming us (which no one actually did) if it wasn't us?

Face it - you used this article as a convenient excuse to bash Israel.

You must be eating some of your namesake.

The USS Narwhal, and a few raven conversions of the old Sturgeon class attack boats did electronic eavesdropping on the Soviet union. They had to maneuver at periscope depth while exposing what basically looked like a fiberglass covered CB antenna to catch signals.

Ah, the old "snorkle whip" antenna. Those 637's had so many masts for so few antennas.(I'm an old USS MCKee 67H sailmonkey.)

Well, there is the possibility that it was a U.S. attack sub. I doubt it seriously, but there is still that possibility. The fact that they say that they could have attacked it is true, but very stupid. To attack a sub that could have belonged to an ally would not be a wise decision. Also, no U.S. sub is exactly a sitting duck. Odds are pretty good that if the Israeli navy had attacked a U.S. submarine, they might have bitten off a wee more than they were counting on chewing.

Well said. The article looks like a good excuse to bash Israel, and surprise surprise was concocted for that purpose.

Wasn't us. Probably French--looking for signals that an Israeli attack on Iran is about to happen.
