Specter gets key backing for Judiciary post Current chairman supports him to head panel, but Majority Leader Bill Frist says, 'We'll see.' By Jeff Miller Call Washington Bureau WASHINGTON | Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter picked up an important endorsement Tuesday in his bid to chair the Judiciary Committee, even as social conservatives vowed to step up their fight to block him. Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the current chairman, said he supported Specter and predicted other committee Republicans would do the same. ''I think this matter will resolve itself,'' said Hatch, who will be forced to step down in January because of GOP term limits on chairmen. But Majority Leader Bill Frist was less enthusiastic when asked about Specter's chances. The Tennessee senator told CNN, ''We'll see.'' ...
Hatch said no one in Tuesday's meeting opposed Specter, whom he called ''highly respected.'' ''I believe he'll be a great chairman,'' Hatch said. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., a Judiciary member, said Tuesday that he was leaning toward supporting Specter...
When Specter was asked if he would continue to be independent-minded as chairman, he answered ''yes.'' But he declined to elaborate.

It has got to be obeyed ( or enforced ) first
The fix is in. Let's hope that Specter really has been "neutered," as some FReepers put it.
Interesting. My usual mental image when hearing about one of Orrin Hatch's sneaky moves is that of a weasel.
What about no Specter at all?
Well, that's the character.
To me, he's simply always looked like an owl. ALWAYS.

My 108-year-old grandmother got one, too. She hung it on the wall over her toilet.
But doesn't he have to get acquitted first? Oh, you're not talking about Phil Specter. My bad.
Saxby Chambliss is a good and reasonable man. Write him.
I know that's how it looks, but if you all haven't see Brit Hume's show today - be sure and watch it. I was feeling the same way until I heard what Michael Barone had to say about it. Barone says he's convinced Specter has gotten the message and will deliver for Bush - or else.
But .. Barone also mentioned that Specter is a leader on tort reform (which is also part of the judiciary committee's role), and Specter is needed to champion that cause for Bush.
Also .. Barone mentioned that Specter is more easily controlled as the chairman than he would be as just a member of the committee. As just a member, he could align himself with the left and cause Bush all kinds of problems (Cici agreed with that assessment).
So .. while I'm suspicious .. let's just see what happens when Judge Thomas comes up for Chief Justice. Schumer has already said there is going to be a fight.
Heh-heh...
It is time we find out which Republicans signed off on this and duly notify them that their seats are forfeit in 2006 and 2008.
This is pure rot. Specter figured himself a shoo-in for the job when he made his idiotic and infamous "litmus test" remarks on November 3rd.
Specter screwed us before...and it won't matter whether he's chairman or a member, he'll screw us again.
Once again, ours has devolved to The Stupid Party.
Hello, friend. In a couple years, you and I will be chuckling at all the naysayers around these parts. People get too worked up about this sh!t. We can't just say the GOP is a broad party, we have to mean it.
Specter will do fine. He knows what is expected of him.
Move on, everyone. We have more important battles.
