Talk-Show Hosts A Bit Tongue-Tied After GOP Gains
By Paul Farhi Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, November 17, 2004; Page C01
Their guy just won reelection by 3.5 million votes. Their party strengthened its majority in the House, in the Senate and in statehouses, with the Supreme Court probably soon to follow. "Moral values" -- their kind of stuff -- are très chic.
This could be a disaster for the nation's right-wing talk-show hosts.
Election Day was a triumph for conservatism, but it may have been a mixed blessing for the people who yak about it on TV and radio. Conservative talk, by far the most popular kind on the airwaves, has always traded on an undercurrent of grievance, a sense of being the underdog against the implacable, oppressive forces of liberal "elitism." The farther conservatives were from power, the better the Us-vs.-Them model worked. The right-wing media matured and prospered under Democrat Bill Clinton, whose two terms in office were a gift that kept on giving to the Limbaughs, G. Gordons, Savages and lesser lights of the electronic right.

Hannity declined to fire back, but conservative talk-show types haven't been shy about baiting each other. Recently, when Scarborough called Bush's first debate performance "disgraceful," Laura Ingraham, among others, blasted him on her program, Scarborough said (proudly).
"They'll be smart to turn on themselves and talk about which conservatives are the 'true' conservatives," says Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers, a trade magazine about the talk-show business. "If they keep beating up liberals, it will ring hollow over time. People realize this isn't 1993 speaking, it's almost 2005."
Bad premise. While Hannity is an idiot, There are still plenty of liberals to fight, we haven't won yet.
To be expected..LEFT WING PROPAGANDA FROM THE WASHINGTON POST..the ole 'DIVIDE AND CONQUER' strategy. They just don't get it..there will always be something that pisses us off going on in the government beauracracy and the liberal media..WATCH OUT WP and the Lame Stream Media..WE ARE NOW 'GUNNIN' FOR YOU! LOL
Scarborough is no "conservative talk-show type". He sold out to the Libs for a paycheck. He's a rung above Tucker Carlson, which places him 40 rungs belos Hannity and 800,000 rungs below Rush. He will continue his inexorabl;e slide into irelevence, then to be replaced by Reagan the Lesser (the gay poodle).
It's time Hannity and others move on to the real issues plaguing America today. It's time they revert back to being a voice for the people and stop the non-stop campaigning. Frankly, they bore me silly. Most of them don't know their subject beyond surface coverage. If they want to keep their edge, they're going to have to start working for a living instead of just shouting down opponents.
Hogwash. rats are still in the congress. They still run universities. The still control television and newspapers. They still sit in judges chairs. 2000 did not signal the end of conservative talk why should a few more seats.
He's hyping a book, I'm sure you didn't know that. Yeesh, I've taken to watching HGTV at 10pm now. My hubby is getting nervous because I feel a need to remodel the house again.
MKM
These people have no clue what they are talking about.
Liberalism is much like Terrorism....It's being confronted and defeated :-)
As much as I hate to admit it, Pat Buchanan has done a good job filling in for Scarborough
Dittos Mad Tom
Everything Scarborough says must be taken with a grain of "ignore this guy completely".
Nonsense. I distinctly remember "them" asking Rush Limbaugh how he would have enough to talk about to stay on the air after George H. W. Bush lost re-election to Bill Clinton.
And at 21 years old you admit that you're still reading comic books. Perhaps you mistakenly consider yourself to be a deep thinker as well?
People who, like Scarborough and O'Reilly, make a very good living saying right-wing things, then turn around and start talking about "those right-wingers" as if they had all along been impartial Men Of The People are despicable. Despicable.
An a$$hole talking to himself. What would you call that, farting?
good post! It is always interesting to read about talk radio in the MSM, notice how they quote Franken like 4 times and fall all over air America.
I wonder what would happen to the rest of the media if it was deregulated like talk radio....
Bad analogy, Hannity isn't an idiot, is bright and takes the fight to the other side with courage.
I don't know what branch of mensa you are the chairman of, but Hannity is talented and has brains.
You don't get millions of listeners without great content these days.
Your analogy about Hannity is way off.
