'Punish France' In Europe, Condoleezza Rice's reputation precedes her

PARIS -- In Europe, it's hard for some to think of Condoleezza Rice -- Colin Powell's expected replacement as U.S. secretary of state -- without recalling the low points in trans-Atlantic relations that grew out of the war in Iraq.

After all, it was Rice who raised eyebrows last year with her Machiavellian suggestions for how Washington should treat European opponents of the U.S.-led invasion.

"Punish France, ignore Germany and forgive Russia," Rice was widely quoted as telling associates in the spring of 2003.

Trans-Atlantic ties have since improved to some extent. But Rice's reputation still precedes her.

"Condie Rice is a woman with character, that's the least we can say," French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier said Tuesday of President Bush's trusted national security adviser.

But Barnier underlined French hopes of rebuilding ties with the United States no matter who holds the post of chief diplomat. "If she is named ... we will continue to have the same relations," Barnier told Europe-1 radio. "With the United States, the moment has come, looking ahead of us, to rebuild, to renew this trans-Atlantic relationship."

Many in Europe, Asia and the Middle East believed Rice will add a more conservative, hawkish bent to U.S. diplomacy after Powell, seen by many as a moderating voice in a Cabinet of hawks.

I do find it amusing that the US military uses a French word for "Shithouse." (Madam Latrine, anyone?)

He wasn't talking about killing Jews.

Suggest you either go back to DU, or observe a few weeks before you make a statement like that.

Can I be the Sec. of Energy??

Day 1: All solar, wind, geothermal, and karma energy funding slashed to zero.

He wasn't talking about killing Jews.

Of course he wasn't -- he was making a flip remark for a chuckle. But the troll wants to miscontrue that remark as being antisemetic, and as supporting the extermination of millions of people. That way, he can retain his delusion that everyone here is a knuckle-dragging, jackboot wearing fascist.

and what Condoleezza Rice said about Saudi Arabia when it happend that almost all of the 911-airjackers were saoudis ?
nothing ? KISS SAUDI ARABIA ?
ROTFL !

Maybe that is because Dr. Rice is intelligent enough to know the difference between the actions of a few individuals acting independently of their nation's government and the official acts of heads of state.

Of course that concept is a bit too hard for most liberals to grasp.

"Punish France, ignore Germany and forgive Russia,"

Condi sounds like my type of woman. As, to powell, he won't be missed, don't know why this RINO was ever given any position of power, except maybe his color had a lot to do with that, for political gain by whichever party powell eventually chose.

I still recall this guy couldn't even decide what party he wanted to be in, that's no real Republican when he doesn't know which party he wants to belong to.

To me a moderate is just a 'lukewarm liberal'. Colin, don't let the door hit you in the bum!

It's good news when liberal newspapers are putting out articles like this, all over the world, means we got exactly the type of person we want in that position, instead of these newspapers cheering and praising someone like powell when he was put in charge.
