Keillor: Born-agains should not have right to vote

Speaking in the aftermath of the presidential election, Democrat radio host Garrison Keillor says he is on a quest to take away the right of born-again Christians to vote, saying their citizenship is actually in heaven, not the United States.

Keillor, host of the popular National Public Radio show "A Prairie Home Companion," made the comments during a speech at Chicago's Rockefeller Memorial Chapel and during his radio monologue the Saturday after the election.

Article I Section 2 of the Constitution specifically mandates that the People of the several states elect the members of the House of Representatives.

And the 18th Amendment mandates that the People of the several states elect the Senators.

So, as far as the Federal Congress, goes, the Constitution does indeed guarantee the right to vote.

And actually, the Constitution also protects the right to vote in the states, but it does so in a short sentence that is easy to overlook.

Article 4, Section 4 guarantees that every state shall have "a republican form of government".

Unpacking that, a republican form of government is one in which the people elect representatives, and the representatives administer the law. Now, this does not guarantee that the people have the right to elect the officials of any branch of government other than the legislature, or rather, at least one house of the legislature. But it does actually guarantee that every state will have an legislature composed of at least one elected house.
Which means that there have to be elections to select those legislators and thus make the form of government "republican". Now enter the other amendments which guarantee various rights of electors.

It is true: a state could (theoretically) have an appointed governor, appointed judges, a state senate of appointed senators.
But the state's equivalent of the house of representatives must be elected by the people.

Right, "Fools" didn't sound right but I couldn't remember what it was, and was too lazy to look it up. Are you trying to emulate him?

He was not disparaging all Christians, but wanted to point out that religion, while important, does not belong in politics, and that religion in politics can never lead to a good result, because there allegiance is not to the United States, but to God, and their view of God, which seems to contradict the freedoms that this country stands for.

Hm. I suggest you don't put words into the mouth of this man or any other. Do you have a relationship with God in Christ? If so, do you leave your relationship with Christ behind, when you act politically?

Rendering unto the God the things that are Gods means rendering all of you and being transformed in all of your involvements and responsibilities.

Furthermore, please list out exactly "they" are in your statement and precisely how "they" are contradicting the freedoms our country stands for.

Telling the truth must be followed by living consistenly with the truth. A part of that means allowing someone who disbelieves, his freedom of disbelief or perverse belief, even as Christ allowed this. It hardly means, however, failing to act according to the truth, because that inconveniences another, or hurts his feelings.

It seems to me that most religious people actually work for a living and contribute to American society. They earn the right to vote every day. Felons, serial welfare recipients and permanent Federal beneficiaries on the other hand...

We Christians aren't only dual citizenships, the liberals have a home in hell...and if we can't vote neither can they, unless the devil is on the ticket. Not accepting Jesus makes one an automatic citizen of hell....so guess the moron on the radio doesn't understand the facts.

...You are, of course, correct. However, I find that aspect heartbreaking and I am so thankful that somehow I was created to recognize the Lord's way...

I wish there were something I could do to awaken those hell-bound...please advise...I have many friends that are...H-B, that is.

The 18th amendment is "Prohibition", the 17th Amendment is the Senate election amendment, which alters the constitution's original stance that the States themselves would appoint 2 representatives to the federal government to ensure the States rights and representation in the government.

Zell Miller and others are working on repealing that amendment to return the senators to their original stated purpose and further shrink the federal government.

As far as the rest of your correction goes, thanks, I was working with the information I got via the Neal Boortz radio show. I was sure that there were voting rights in the constitution, but I figured he knew more than I did.

I could hate this man, but I won't. He is a sad, sad person.

He does not know Jesus - not in the least - or does he even have an inkling of what being a Christian is or he wouldn't say such things.

I KNOW I have a place waiting for me in heaven and that gives me great peace. But for now, I live on earth and am here to do God's will each and every day.

Garrison Keillor will now be on my prayer list - something I think, at this point, he would find quite "comical."

Democrat radio host Garrison Keillor says he is on a quest to take away the right of born-again Christians to vote, saying their citizenship is actually in heaven, not the United States.

Can you imagine what would happen if he had said he is on a quest to take away the right of Jews to vote, saying their citizenship is actually in the Promised Land, not the United States.

or if

He had said he is on a quest to take away the right of Blacks to vote, saying their citizenship is actually in the Mother Africa, not the United States.

Why is this bigot allowed to be on the public airwaves?

How did a civilized people like the Germans end up killing 6 million Jews?

It starts out with this kind of "joking".

Keillor's a disgrace and a menace. Deep down, he isn't kidding.
