Marine Whose Photo Lit Up Imaginations Keeps His Cool (Famous Iraq War Picture Alert)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/13/03 | Patrick J. McDonnell

Posted on 11/13/2004 5:36:06 AM PST by goldstategop

Miller is the young man whose gritty, war-hardened portrait appeared Wednesday in the Los Angeles Times, taken by Luis Sinco, a Times photographer traveling with Miller's unit: Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment.

In the full-frame photo, taken after more than 12 hours of nearly nonstop deadly combat, Miller's camouflage war paint is smudged. He sports a bloody nick on his nose. His helmet and chin strap frame a weary expression that seems to convey the timeless fatigue of battle.

And there is the cigarette, of course, drooping from the right side of his mouth in a manner that Bogart or John Wayne would have approved of. Wispy smoke drifts off to his left.

The image, printed in more than 100 newspapers, has quickly moved into the realm of the iconic.

If you didn't read the entire article, please read it. Miller is STILL a very young man...and from the description of his life in Kentucky, a very normal, rural type, too. Read how his hometown was named, etc. His mama is only 39; she must have had him at an early age. I can just hear her calling him to supper, "Jimmy-Blake, come on in. Supper's on the table!"

Good story; I really hope he makes it home O.K.

The Los Angeles Times and other publications have received scores of e-mails wanting to know about this mysterious figure. Many women, in particular, have inquired about how to contact him.

These Hollywood pretty boys can eat their hearts out. This guy is the real thing.

With the stress that guy is under, smoking is okay with me.

published letters to the editor in the NY Post included the usual anti-smoking rant,of course not including the fact that he's risking his life in the combat zone.
and for some reason there are arab cafes entirely devoted to smoking permitted here in NYC.

Semper Fi !

I have a stupid question...What means 'bttt'? I have wondered about this for YEARS.
So now I display my ignorance. Is it possible that it is 'bump to the top'??? (I just thought of this now.)

I love this picture. God bless all our warriors.

I bet he's got few thousand marriage proposals already, I'm tempted to send him one! I can just imagine the jokes he has to put up with.

I think the manufacturer of Marlboro will be very happy to pay him for an advertisement poster or commercial with that pic for their famous product. While I am not for smoking, I admit this pic is sure one of the top one hundred in history of war as a heroic pic, matching the scene of waving flag of Iwo Jima.

I have only smoked one cigarette in my entire life, but believe that smoking is your own decision.

How the massive anti-smoking lawsuit gave Hollywoood a pass for their blatant promotion of the "sport" astounds me; until I realize that liberals don't sue liberals.
