Marine Whose Photo Lit Up Imaginations Keeps His Cool (Famous Iraq War Picture Alert)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/13/03 | Patrick J. McDonnell

Posted on 11/13/2004 5:36:06 AM PST by goldstategop

Miller is the young man whose gritty, war-hardened portrait appeared Wednesday in the Los Angeles Times, taken by Luis Sinco, a Times photographer traveling with Miller's unit: Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment.

In the full-frame photo, taken after more than 12 hours of nearly nonstop deadly combat, Miller's camouflage war paint is smudged. He sports a bloody nick on his nose. His helmet and chin strap frame a weary expression that seems to convey the timeless fatigue of battle.

And there is the cigarette, of course, drooping from the right side of his mouth in a manner that Bogart or John Wayne would have approved of. Wispy smoke drifts off to his left.

The image, printed in more than 100 newspapers, has quickly moved into the realm of the iconic.

I understand where you are coming from - but I think you are missing the point. No one here is saying smoking is good for you.............

The way I see this issue is that the newspapers that printed this picture basically told the PC nanny crowd to stick a sock in it. They can't see the soul of this young man because the only thing they see is the cigarette and that is an affront to their delicate sensibilities.

To them he is not a young warrior fighting to protect their right to whine about his picture - they only see an evil smoker.

Every time I see that picture, I don't see a smoker - the cigarette means nothing to me - what I see is a young man who volunteered to risk his life for me and mine. And I salute him.

Shoot, shoot, shoot 'til you shoot that man to death!

Tell St Peter at the pearly gates, I just hates to make him wait.

But I've just gotta shoot another terrorist!"

You know, my dear, if some politician, during the Second World War, would have uttered what folks like Al Gore, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, etc. have done this political cycle, they would have been shot for commiting treason. Now, I suspect you have an ulterior motive, and you know what that is. I have no problem with political disagreement and discourse as long as it does not put American military service personnel in danger and harms way. But, the words that flow from Demcrat leaders mouths are indeed words that have enabled and emboldened our enemies. Thank god, the American people have the wisdom to see the whirling storm at hand. You Democrats certainly never see it or care a wit about it. Now if you think that I intend to standby, while morons like Michael Moore and Harvey Weinstein work to bring this country down, dear you are sadly mistaken. I see the handwriting on the wall, and IMHO it your side that presents either a communist or facist point of view!!! Under the first amendment I have the right to speak my piece and along with 61,000,000 "free" Americans we have spoken very clearly. I intend to do all that I can legally and rightfully to destroy the current Democrat Party. I imagine the "giants" of the past proud Democrat Party, Jefferson, FDR, HST and JFK must be turning over in their graves!!! It is you. my dear, that suffers a bad case of being unAmerican, not me!!!

The funniest thing about this pic, to me, is how it's by an L.A. Times photog, yet the L.A. Times was the only paper that carried it in a small version, and on the 6th page. All other papers (in Seattle, Houston, NYC, etc.) had it blown up and placed front and center.

They write about its iconic status now, but, typically, it was other papers that recognized its power and made it famous.

She had him when she was 19. I had my oldest when I was 20.

I am remembering my thoughts about my son when he was that age. He joined the Marines, too, but blew out a knee.

I was so proud of him for joining. Thankfully, I never had to deal with combat. I don't know how I would have held up.

God bless this mom and her son. They do us proud!

but what you propose isn't freedom, it's fascism.

Your well thought-out words were rendered pointless by your use and abuse of this tiresome phrase. It would be well to learn and remember the proper definition of fascism.
The irony of course is that, if anything, the militant anti-smokers and their endless litany of reasons why others should not be allowed to smoke fits in perfectly with the correct definition of a Fascist state.

"vast majority of them being in their 20s and 30s "

yes, war is a young man's game . . .

being fit; being confident . . . necessary characteristics for success in battle -- and manly and attractive, too.

Thanks Sweet Ich!
That makes sense. It was so strange that when I typed it, it rang a bell. There are 2 or 3 others that I haven't figured out yet, too.
When I come across them, I'll swallow my pride and ask.
Thanks again.

polygirl...I believe you completely misunderstood JLAGRAYFOX and I'm utterly amazed and confused how you came to your conclusions. You're new around here (11/13/04) so perhaps before you accuse someone of something so terrible, inquire as to the meaning of his/her posts. Thank you.

I'm still smoking after fifty years as are the aformentioned cousin and brother. We are all still alive and doing just fine.

I started smoking when I was 16. Peer pressure.

But like I said earlier: I never killed anyone by drunken smoking on the highway. heh!

Well, we are not allowed porn or booze in the middle east. But we can smoke. The useage of any type of tobacco product, mostly cigars, is very large.

Well, smoking helps one to relax. And it doesn't make you all 'wavy' in the head, either.

You sound like you are over there? God bless you and if you are over there, thank you SO much for your service!!!
