Does anyone have the statisitcs on which states generate the most volunteers for the US military. It would be interesting to overlay this on top of the reb/blue map

By county would be much more accurate. Even that may be deceptive since counties with large cities have higher population density and likely would result in higer numbers of troops.

This is a start, though it'll take some work to sort through it.

It would be interesting to see such statistics. But they would be of no use if we were to present them to the blue county liberals as proof of some moral highground. They think the troops are war criminals, and would be delighted to know most of them come from the redzone.

Wouldn't mean much since most of the troops that come from blue states come from conservative families within those blue states.

I've been told that West Virginia has the highest per-capita. And it is a "Red State".

While those tables make for interesting reading, they don't tell where the troops come from, only where they are now. California, Virginia, Texas, and North Carolina come up real big because they have so many military bases.

It is worth also differentiating between the officer corps and the enlisted folk.

I'm willing to bet that the enlisted people overwhelmingly represent depressed areas of the country, red or blue. Look for places with lots of economic hits, loss of manufacturing for example, or general lack of opportunity.

Just a thought. When I was in, I didn't meet alot of other people from MA, but every other guy was from PA or MI.

I was one of the only MA guys in my boot camp company & 2 following duty stations. Everybody else was from PA or the south, with the exception of this kid from Iowa named Nickerson who couldn't swim (pretty bad for a future coastie!). He joined to see the ocean. What a dumb fu@&er he was. damn near shot the range officer on the first day of m16 training. We had to do thousands of extra push ups because of Nickerson. I will never forget that screw up. I am shocked we never gave him a blanket party education because of anyone i ever met, he deserved it the most!
