By county would be much more accurate. Even that may be deceptive since counties with large cities have higher population density and likely would result in higer numbers of troops.

It would be interesting to see such statistics. But they would be of no use if we were to present them to the blue county liberals as proof of some moral highground. They think the troops are war criminals, and would be delighted to know most of them come from the redzone.

Wouldn't mean much since most of the troops that come from blue states come from conservative families within those blue states.
I've been told that West Virginia has the highest per-capita. And it is a "Red State".
It is worth also differentiating between the officer corps and the enlisted folk.
I'm willing to bet that the enlisted people overwhelmingly represent depressed areas of the country, red or blue. Look for places with lots of economic hits, loss of manufacturing for example, or general lack of opportunity.
Just a thought. When I was in, I didn't meet alot of other people from MA, but every other guy was from PA or MI.
