WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Judie Brown, president of American Life League, issued the following statement in response to news that White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales is being considered as the replacement for U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft:
"President Bush appears to be doing all that he can to downright ignore pro-life principles. There can be no other explanation for his recommendation of Alberto Gonzales as attorney general. Gonzales has a record, and that record is crystal clear.
"As a Texas Supreme Court justice, Gonzales' rulings implied he does not view abortion as a heinous crime. Choosing not to rule against abortion, in any situation, is the epitome of denying justice for an entire segment of the American population -- preborn babies in the womb.
"When asked if his own personal feelings about abortion would play a role in his decisions, Gonzales told the Los Angeles Times in 2001 that his 'own personal feelings about abortion don't matter... The question is, what is the law, what is the precedent, what is binding in rendering your decision. Sometimes, interpreting a statute, you may have to uphold a statute that you may find personally offensive. But as a judge, that's your job.' Gonzales' position is clear: the personhood of the preborn human being is secondary to technical points of law, and that is a deadly perspective for anyone to take.
"President Bush claims he wants to assist in bringing about a culture of life. Such a culture begins with total protection for every innocent human being from the moment that person's life begins. Within the short period of one week, the president has been silent on pro-abortion Sen. Very well said! There's no indication that Gonzalez supports legal abortion in principle. I am a member of the Naitonal Right to Life organization and I think Gonzalez decided correctly in the case at hand. I don't approve in loopholes to parental notification laws, but Gonzalez may not approve of them either. However, the law in question had a loophole and it was Gonzalez's job to decide whether the law was being applied correctly. Judges are supposed to interpret laws, not pretend the laws already read as they would like them to.
Techinally, it's still legal. Hopefully that changes soon. So our beef is Gonzalez doesn't make up the law as he goes along like the Florida Supreme Court in 2000; or the Roe v. Wade court; or the Massachusetts Supreme Court of 2004; or the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The stupid people who have direct ties behind the scenes say this is a stepping stone to put Gonzales on the Federal bench, perhaps SCOTUS.

When Gonzales was a member of the Texas Supreme Court, he voted to allow a teenager to get an abortion without notifying her parents, circumventing the notification law in that state. His vote was the tie-breaker in that decision. Joe Pojman of the Greater Austin Right to Life Committee noted that vote when Gonzales was appointed as White House Counsel in late December 2000. "We had hoped he would do more to protect parents' rights," the pro-life said at that time. "We don't know how he stands on the fundamental issue of abortion, because he hasn't had a chance to rule on it." And Joseph Farah, founder and editor of WorldNetDaily, has his own reservations about Gonzales taking the lead at the DOJ. He recalls hearing the White House Counsel say two years ago that it is up to the Supreme Court alone to determine what actions of government are constitutional. "The Supreme Court tells us what the Constitution says and means," Gonzales said at that private dinner Farah attended. The WND founder says "Clearly, Gonzales has exactly the wrong judicial philosophy for times such as these. Americans don't need black-robed justices divining the meaning of the Constitution."

I am a strong pro-life person, however I think the abortion issue is inserted where it does not belong, What has the AG got to do with that issue?
Conservatives shoot themselves in the foot sometimes,we end up losing. Nothing will change regarding Roe, it has morphed to a constitutional issue, the one way to stop it is to stop women getting abortions in the first place, perhaps start with the teaching of abstinence, gee what a concept! The schools are teaching too much about sex and how to, that should stop, better they teach basics academics.
Please - please - you're sounding like the liberal left. When I voted for George W. I didn't expect him to be in lockstep with ALL my opinions and preferences. Could we give him the benefit of the doubt without starting the screaming and the petitions. He's a good man- giving us good men and women. Only children expect perfection in their leaders. Anyone who wants everthing their way should not be voting but running AND when in office reality will be confronted.

Officials are supposed to apply the law, courts interpret the law as written, legislators are supposed to write & change it. It is not conservative or pro-life to advocate judicial activism and mis-application of laws.

I have to disagree with American Life League on this issue.
The fact that Gonzales will be AG and NOT be a SCOTUS nominee is GREAT news!!!
I have no reason to believe that Gonzales will cause us any trouble in the position of USAG. And even if I'm wrong, he'll be gone in 4 years.
On the other hand, if he were placed on the SCOTUS, I believe he would be a moderate much like O'Connor and Kennedy -- causing us nothing but headaches year after year. And he might be on SCOTUS for 30+ years.
My advice to the ALL and other pro-life groups is to pick and choose your battles much more carefully. These groups will marginalize their positions greatly if they continue in this fashion -- and I would really hate to see this happen.
