Saving Private Ryan replaced with Born on the 4th of July!

Posted on 11/12/2004 7:21:18 AM PST by DonnDe

This morning I heard a radio caller mention that the Rockford, IL ABC affiliate replaced the Veterans' Day showing of "Saving Private Ryan" with "Born on the 4th of July". I checked the WTVO website (wtvo.com) and it seemed to confirm.

RBD,
Well that all makes alot of sense and I'm glad you weighed in on it.

But RBD, why did "Ryan" have to be replaced by Tony F*cking Danza in my neck of the woods?! Why not something remotely even maybe a little sort of kinda connected to Veteran's Day? I was insulted, frankly.

Not that I think you have answers to that, I'm just saying that not airing it wasn't the bad part so much- it was what they aired instead that really got my dander up.

Do you realize that if the FCC were created after the Revolution that books would not be allowed across state lines without federal licensure and oversight?

The FCC is disgusting and should be disbanded. No conservative, who values individual rights and sees government's only purpose as guaranteeing those rights, can view the FCC as a good thing.

I really feel for you having to see Tony Danza. That probably came about because when the affiliates decided to not air Ryan they were stuck with having to find something. As you can see most stations aired something that they had purchased the right to. Be that Lethal Weapon, Tony Danza, 4th of July (a particularly bad choice by a GM considering the climate already established by not airing Ryan), Andy Griffith, or Die Hard. All of these programs are syndicated so the station purchased the rights to air them when ever they pleased, so you were probably getting programs that would be used to fill early morning schedules or other times when the network isn't feeding programs. Also with the short notice of the airing of the film most stations didn't have time to go out and purchase good programing as a replacement, so they were stuck airing whatever they had around. Hope that helps.

That is why some stations weren't going to gamble on whether people would complain, because people had and whether the FCC would react.

A lot out there said there is no way the FCC would fine you for showing SPR, but do you as a GM want to really gamble your job and 100 others on whether or not the FCC would react......I mean this is a government agency we are talking about.

I agree completely. Why risk it? What I really don't understand is those people who want it both ways.

In Nashville it was Hoosiers.

On ABC or on Sinclair (WZTV, WUXP)?

Sinclair has a contract that allows them to show Hoosiers as many times as they like without extra charge.

As much as I would love to come on here and report a vast left wing consipracy I just can't. My GM is a liberal, but I really don't think this was a political stand.

As far as people wanting it both ways, they can have it both ways, if you don't want to see it change the channel.

Don't you know that now after this election the nannies have a big mandate for their morality? Which, of course, is a good thing. But you don't get to think for yourself, I'm talking government mandated morality! It is not up to you to decide what to watch, read, listen to, or decide for yourself and your family if Howard Stern is a bloated moronic asswipe, the government needs to protect you from yourself! There could be cursing in that rock music!

You are also not smart enough to figure out that if Janet Jackson shows her breast during the Superbowl, that yes it is offensive, and we have a powerful private sector to prevent and punish... no we need a government agency to spend valuable resources in time of war to have a hearing that eventually did nothing (did they even fine anyone for that?)

But don't worry, The Nanny State Government has made the airwaves safe for you to babysit your children. Don't bother taking any responsibility for yourself or your family, we have government agencies to do that for you!!!

/BARF

Might be true with some affiliates, but not all. The one in Lexington, KY was truly afraid of the fines, I believe.

Additionally, you brought up NYPD Blue, it at least airs at 10:00 PM (EST). Saving Private Ryan was scheduled to start at 8:00 last night which has been typically reserved as the "family hour".

Lastly, have you ever actually watched Desperate Housewives? I swear to you that I am a 100% heterosexual male, but I actually like it. It's not nearly as indecent as people have made it out to be. Actually has a good plot with a bit of mystery to it. Trust me, there are MUCH smuttier shows on during the afternoon than this one is.

Mel Gibson was a sniper in the Vietnam war? Or are you referring to his character in the LW series?

I would like to take this opportunity to say that the FCC sucks and needs to be disbanded. Same with FDA, DOE... I could go on.

Yes I have my flame suit on.

No flames here, bud. I couldn't agree more.

Why don't they just show The Battleship Potemkin?

Or "Reds".

Ya know, down here in the "Bible belt",WAAY TV in Huntsville Alabama played "Saving Private Ryan" un-edited.Aren't we suppposed to be "religious fanatics" that swayed the election?Funny how the liberal "enlightened" cities refused to play it based on the graphic violence and language, but us "Holy Rollers" saw no problem.

yes it is bull crud, however the station can edit it for content. Where as with SPR, they cannot.

I think all of these "little" stations better start to wake up. Cable has given so many of us options...and we don't really have to stay loyal to the local dimwits. If they are all out to make a political statement, especially about the FCC..then I don't have a problem with that. But if this is one of those Blue verus Red scenarios...then they really are kinda low. I'd drop sponsorship on them real quick. Let your local used cardealer know that you aren't happy...let the local resturant owner know too. Local stations survive because of local money...if it isn't there...its a dead station.

I was saying that the switch was ridiculous. I wasn't opposing you at all.

In fact, I agree with you 100%.
