Saving Private Ryan replaced with Born on the 4th of July!

Posted on 11/12/2004 7:21:18 AM PST by DonnDe

This morning I heard a radio caller mention that the Rockford, IL ABC affiliate replaced the Veterans' Day showing of "Saving Private Ryan" with "Born on the 4th of July". I checked the WTVO website (wtvo.com) and it seemed to confirm.

In Lexington, Kentucky we had an Andy Griffith Show marathon! Much better than either Born on the Fourth of July OR Saving Private Ryan!

Hey, Mel Gibson plays a veteran in the Lethal Weapon movies. He was a sniper during Vietnam, and a damn good one at that!

Do you really blame the Boston affiliate for not choosing to show Saving Private Ryan? We campaign long and hard to get rid of indecency on prime time television. Some affiliates agree to not show this because they are worried that the violence and language would offend some people, and now you're pissed off about that???

Saving Private Ryan was fantasy also

They could have based the movie on some actual historical incident

Band of brothers was MUCH BETTER

Ah, I had forgotten about that. However with Danny Glover in the cast, I couldn't bear to watch it.

Now that's obscene, I'd yank their license over that.

In western MA, we had the worst of all it seems: The Tony Danza Show, back-to-back with the Jane Pauley show.

I think this affiliate went out of its way to air the most asinine programming it could lay hands on.

pardon - I was NOT endorsing a PRO COMMUNIST movie "born on the 4th of july"! Neither was I saying anything nice about privat ryan's gratuitous violence and cursing.

Can somebody tell me WHY the older WWII movies - all rated G - are still enjoyed by all?? Americans, that is.

It did not take curses, gutter talk, gallons of blood and sickening special effects then --- why now? Other than the lack of intelligence of those who think that is excellence in entertainment.

A crybaby and a liar. Stone and Kovic fail to mention that he was wounded on his second tour in Vietnam. Kovic begged to be sent back, even going so far as writing a letter to the Commandant of the Marine Corps requesting orders to Vietnam. Read all about it in "Stolen Valor".

The affiliates don't give a rat's behind about indecency on prime time. They certainly are not worried about violence and language offending anyone. These same affiliates air "Desperate Housewives" and "NYPD Blue" every week.

The affiliates were out to make a political statement, period. They want to show the FCC what enforcing the rules to the letter upsets them.

In Atlanta, we got an hour of a Jimmy Carter special. Quite obvious from the stations did show to prove my point.

C'mon, doncha know it's only indecent when the message or the messenger is anti-American? In appropriate contexts the "f" word is perfectly acceptable speech to be shown on prime time TV.

Do I need a sarcasm tag?

I would like to take this opportunity to say that the FCC sucks and needs to be disbanded. Same with FDA, DOE... I could go on.

Yes I have my flame suit on.

I work for one of the ABC affiliates who decided to err on the side of caution. The problem was more than just the FCC, Spielberg wouldn't let anyone bleep out the F-word which is used 47 times, for a grand total of 1250000 in fines. ABC wouldn't let the affiliates air the movie at 10:00 escaping the rule, which really has me pissed with ABC, they seem to enjoy having their affiliates hung out to dry. Of course if we got fined or lost our license it would not hurt them they would just go to another station in town and sign them. The station tried to get the FCC ruling and wasn't able to, so our GM was faced with either showing the movie and risking not only the Fines, but legal fees and the loss of our license. If we lost our license that would be the end of the station and 100 people would be out of a job over a movie and also what I believe was a big pissing contest between ABC/Disney, FCC and Spielberg. The stations caught in the middle of this were stuck. I have heard people say that surely no one would complain about SPR, but the last time we aired it they did, the difference is that the FCC wasn't on the Warpath like it is now.

These programs don't air at 8 at night while the first 30 min of Ryan would.

The FCC told the network/stations that they would have to act on their own "conscience", no waiver would be given. Which is exactly what I mean when I say that there are no clear cut rules about what is allowed and what is not. The definition of actionable only comes AFTER someone else (namely a group of letter writing nanny staters) gets their panties in a twist.
