Maybe this is just a case of profound ignorance on the part of WTVO management of the subject matter beneath the pretty title, as with Pat Buchanan playing "Born in the U.S.A." at his campaign rallies. Otherwise....

This morning I heard a radio caller mention that the Rockford, IL ABC affiliate replaced the Veterans' Day showing of "Saving Private Ryan" with "Born on the 4th of July". I checked the WTVO website (wtvo.com) and it seemed to confirm.
crappy movie replaced by pro communist movie. Wunderbar!
Our local ABC station ran Saving private Ryan last night.
Here in Austin they replaced it with Oprah, followed by one of the Lethal Weapons episodes. Disgusting. I wrote the local affiliate (KVUE) and asked them why they couldn't run a similar movie, eg. The Longest Day, Battle of the Bulge,etc...
That is utter bull crud.

Steven Spielberg stated that if Saving Pvt. Ryan were broadcast on TV, it would have to run uncut: no language or scene deletions. The networks honored this request the first time the movie ran a couple years ago. This time, the networks seem to be sticking it to the FCC in mock fear of getting complaints from the public. So bleeping out the swear words was not an option for the networks.
Followed by "The Steel Helmet"
That was one of the few movies that I walked out.. Seems like he was a crybaby..

Ours did too - I couldnt help but get the impresion they did so unedited to see if conservatives would howl about a war movie, like they did janets pancakes

What a joke.
The network specifically asked for a waiver from the FCC should any groups complain en masse about the language in Saving Private Ryan (like Wildmon's group did the first time it was aired). The FCC refused to grant them any assurance that they or their affiliates would not be fined. ABC then offered, to its affiliate stations, to pay any fine that may result. Many local stations, wary that they would run into trouble when re-newing their license with complaints on record (no matter who ultimately pays the fine, the complaint stays on the station's record), opted out. Can't say I blame them.
