Our religion forbids us to strike a woman, although, I admit, I do it all the time, and I know I shouldn't. But if they were my sisters-in-law, as Allah is my witness, I would not stop beating them.

"But the fact that parents aren't qualified to teach their children is a fact, especially in specialized courses..."
Our newly elected State Auditor, who is a CPA for 30 years is also not "qualified" to teach accounting in government schools because he lacks the required "certification".
Comes to that, Professor, are you certifed to teach your specialty in a government school?

Forget it. Pit is just parrotting back what he/she has heard from the TV

Info and background;

Pit is a woman, claims to be a college professor, and has been all over FR for a few weeks now (using an old sign up date as cover) advocating abortion, and myriad other leftist causes. She is parroting back DU talking points.

If she is a college professor, she teaches no classes, because she is here 24/7 posting liberal positions.

Yes, the temptation is very great. One is a huge flaming liberal, too.

In most cases the "product" is a badly-educated person, without social skills... Not in all cases, but in the majority...

Do you actually KNOW any homeschooled children?

I'm starting to agree. Pitiricus hasn't offered anything like a reasoned reply to criticisms of her pro-choice, anti-conservative "grenades". It seems to be lib talking points, from beginning to end.

I've been teaching in the public school systems for 10 years, and I'd sooner take a bullet than send any child of mine to any one of them! (No, my wife and I don't have kids.... it seems we can't, at this point.)

Non sequitur... You don't want to discuss facts, and try attacks...

Your children must be... like you! Not able to distinguish between discussion and attacks...

My guess is that they'll fail in college...

"A lot of my social interaction was with adults and I actually view that as a benefit to me," said Jon Woodhams. "I'm able to communicate with my teachers. I'm able to explain problems I'm having and we're able to work out solutions."

Our youngest who is a frehman in high school, just returned after three years of being homeschooled. He needed some re-adjustment; basically he had to learn to sit still for classes again. He's doing well, though, and all of his teachers like him. What he doesn't have, which amuses them, is the servile attitude of the other kids. He's used to doing his own learning, and dealing with adults without the master/slave mentality.

I have a B. Sc in mathematics and a Ph. D. in economics and I don't find that I am qualified to teach either mathematics or economics to young children.

Very few of the parents are ex-teachers. The average are people with a lot of good intentions and very few skills for teaching, and also without any knowledge of mathematics, or physics or chemistry or even grammar. The same is also true of the famous cooperatives. Again, some do work for some children, but by far not the majority!

Which of course is completely false...
1) I am not a leftist (LOL)

2) abortion isn't infanticide

3) as usual your debating skills are completely lacking...

It would be a good test. Be careful not to be thrown off track by a few posts trown in to keep up the charade. This poster has been discovered and booted before, IMO, and always tries to present a "moderate" face.

The whole thing is a sham that management hasn't caught on to yet. But hey, I'm in favor of letting her post this crap so we can refute it.

Maybe that's what Pitiricus felt is lacking in HS'ers... ;-)

Good morning.

If the "vast majority of parents" are not qualified to teach then why do so many homeschooled kids do so well in SATs.
You are flatly wrong in your statements. Homeschooled kids do better as a rule in all areas of academia than the victims of the public school establishment and they don't have to suffer under PC.
Are you part of that establishment? Teacher? Administrator? Upon what do you base your statements?

But the fact that parents aren't qualified to teach their children is a fact, especially in specialized courses...

When most homeschooled kids get to the high school courses, parents look for tutors, or the kids attend Community Colleges for the courses for which parents don't think themselves qualified. Our daughter, a homeschooled Junior, will attend a local CC in the Spring semester, taking Chemistry. After that, she plans to take Physics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and a couple of other courses. When she graduates from high school, she'll have a full year of college credits. She's doing this instead of spending the time taking an AP course, but the end is the same.

Folks just don't give parents enough credit for figuring out how to provide their kids with what they need for their learning. At this point, I am not my daughter's teacher; she's doing all that on her own, including having taught herself Japanese. It is my job to provide the resources and be here for discussions as needed.

I find that teaching things like mathmatics to your children involves more of an understanding of children than of mathematics. Do you have children?

To: 2nd amendment mama

This is the peoblem with government monopolies and public unions... This is one of the result of this (checking the quality of teachers is another...)

But this isn't a problem of schools per se but of the organization of schools. This should be reformed...

Another example: I was born in France, where schools were excellent. Mathematic teachers had to have a degree in mathematics and a minor in education... When I came here, I couldn't believe what I was told, that all that was required of teachers was a degree... in education. So you could have a completely inept teacher in mathematics who never learned math but had a degree in education (I understand this is changing little by little)... This is stupid!

So the peoblem aren't schools but the fact that teachers' unions have had too free a hand in changing requirements to protect mediocre teachers...
