CBS news reporters and staff are experiencing anxiety awaiting the release of the findings of an independing commission investigating the discredited 60 Minutes report by Dan Rather on Sept. 8 about George W. Bush's National Guard service, veteran Face the Nation anchor Bob Schieffer told today's (Thursday) Philadelphia Inquirer. "We're all apprehensive," Schieffer told the newspaper. "Nobody knows what this commission is going to find. Look, we made a terrible mistake. CBS has admitted it made a terrible mistake, and Dan [Rather, who fronted the report] has apologized. We take this very seriously, and some serious steps are going to have to be taken." Shieffer indicated that no decision about the "serious steps" is likely to be made until the commission's report is released. "I guarantee you that CBS will do whatever it takes to get our credibility back. If we don't have credibility, we'll cease to be. That's our coin of the realm," he said. The Inquirer cited internal rumors at the network that Rather may be asked to step down as CBS Evening News anchor. "Obviously, I'm concerned for Dan," Schieffer, a longtime friend, said. "He's holding up pretty well under the circumstances, but his situation has taken its toll, no question. How could it not?"
Exactly--fake but authentic was his actual response.
Very clever rang; "if a tree falls in the forest" Watch CBS start cutting the dead lumber.
Something's in the air - BBC is cutting 50% of its employees....(what can they possibly do with 28,000 employees?) That's one per viewer!!!!
Will Rather ever honestly apologize about the forgeries and his role in the resulting scandal?
That cartoon of Rather as the DNC's monkey would be funny if it wasn't true.
Has he always been as mentally unstable as he is now? I never watched him (my father wouldn't let me!) until a few times recently. What I see is a man who appears to be suffering from dementia.
A pathetic little man and Viacom Lap Dog.
Woof
Rather apologized? Did I miss something? The only recent apology from CBS concerned last night's interruption of CSI to report the death of Arafat. BTW, I've been predicting Rather's departure from the CBS Evening News for more than a year, and the "60 Minutes" debacle is nothing more than convenient justification for the network to make the change. The Evening News has been mired in last place for more than a decade, costing CBS millions of dollars in revenue. The can push Rather out the door (along with his $10 million annual salary), put John Roberts or Scott Pelley in the anchor chair, pay them 80% less, and make $8 million more in the process. Stick a fork in Dan, he's done. Look for him to leave the evening news sometime in the spring--perhaps sooner.
" If we don't have credibility, we'll cease to be."

Er, When has that ever been an impediment for the MSM?
"Look, we made a terrible mistake."
Mistake? Or told a really big lie? I certainly hope CBS 'ceases to be', it richly deserves such an ignominious demise. And lying should be synonomous with Dan Rather, like Clinton and interns...
WHAT CREDIDABILTY?
Blather won't apologize for the forgeries, when he thinks that they are true, in the first place.
Bob Scheiffer is more subtle than Rather, but just as wrong. Read this...just for fun.

For starters, how about apologizing for decades of distorted news, political propaganda, and an obvious bias against Republicans?
Reminds me of Janet Reno, when she said she took full responsibility for the Branch Davidian debacle, then stayed in office.
That statement is a big steaming pile of Barbara Striesand! Dan never apologized, he just said the 'could not verify the authenticity' of the documents - then called out the President to 'answer the questions' posed in the documents.
Dan Rather is a far left liberal, and a cheerleader for the Democrat's and always has been - he now stands naked in the bright light of public exposure, however. Everyone can see what he stands for, and how bad he hates American freedom in general, and deeply loathes President Bush as a persn and a leader.
I hope CBS keeps Rather. Let him serve as a pillar and daily reminder to the American public of what a sleaze organization CBS news, and by extention, the broadcast news organizations are.
I used to write for a college paper with a big circulation.
No way would we have used photocopies of important documents like CBS did. Their "experts" okay PHOTOCOPIES?
How can you verify a photocopied signature?
They also didn't check their source's story to see if his source really had access to the memos as was claimed. This is incredibly bad journalism.
You can't chalk this up to incompetence; this is a rush to make a name for themselves, hoping the WH would cave on the "evidence."
Nah - far too much seniority.
I've never seen anyone look worse on television than Rather on election night. He was shaky, uncertain, biased, bullying to co-workers, etc.
Even if he hadn't revealed himself as a tool of the Democrats, why does the network continue to go with such an out-of-touch dinosaur?
'Independing' - is that some weird concatenation of 'independent' and 'pending', or just a brain fart by the writer of this piece?
