ABC News: Some Say U.S. No Longer Feels Like Home (gag alert)

Posted on 11/11/2004 6:28:46 AM PST by AuburnJenn

Nov. 10, 2004 -- Leora Dowling and her husband thought returning from deep in "red" America to her native New England would make them feel more comfortable, more like the people around them shared their values. Since the election, she's been contemplating another move. To Italy.

"After the election, my husband and I asked ourselves, 'How could our country be heading backward? How could so many people miss or choose to ignore the obvious failures of the Bush administration?'" the former Florida resident said.

Dowling, a college professor who lives with her husband in Vermont, is not alone in feeling that the wounds cannot be healed, or at least that Bush is not the man to do it.

For Dowling, as for others who ABCNews.com spoke with, though the immediate anger may be focused on the president — whether because of the war in Iraq, his stance on same-sex weddings, what they say is his blurring of the line between church and state, or his championing of the Patriot Act — there is a broader concern. They say they feel the United States is changing in ways they do not like, and they feel powerless to stop it.

Italy?

If she doesn't feel at home in loony, leftist and lost Vermont, she sure ain't gonna like Italy.

The more of these Socialists that move to Europe the better as far as I'm concerned.

Interesting that they did not do stories of this sort for members of the right during the Clinton years. How many elections have I sat out over the years and had results that flew in the face of my beliefs. I wish these people would stop whining. It's getting dull.

How could so many people miss or choose to ignore that Hanoi John was promising far more than could ever be paid for?
How could so many people miss or choose to ignore that Hanoi John was a seditious traitor?
How could so many people miss or choose to ignore that we are not, and have never been a socialist country?

Actually, I agree with them--but for the opposite reasons. The US used to be a "mind your own business" meritocracy. Not now, with all of the PC strictures on discourse and conduct, not to mention the special rights accorded the noisiest special interests.

"Liberals" are simply weak-minded cowards who are unable to define or defend their core values.

They believe that when they co-exist next to people who are willing to defend their values that they, the liberals, will be exposed as the cowards they truly are. (thus the impulse to move away).

True liberals (like Jefferson) will defend liberty with a gun. These modern "liberals" simply wish to exist without such responsibilities. (they will let the conservatives do their fighting for them).

Where do we donate to get these communists out of the country?!

It's disgusting that a so called "news" organization would keep printing anti-Bush hype like this. I don't recall this type of thing when Bill and Hitlary Clinton were co-presidents.

Dear Leora,

We are all Americans first, then Republicans and Democrats.

Don't worry, more than likely, the sun will come up tomorrow, little puppies will still scramble into your lap and fall asleep, and it is still a wonderful world and a glorious country in which we live.

Your lamentations are silly and immature. But you have a right to utter them, nonetheless.

But for your own sake, get back to work and smile. All will be well. I promise.

Smile, darn you, smile!

If Kerry had won I might've moved to another country. I don't think America would have been safe from terrorists as he saw it as a legal problem rather than kill the scum before they kill us.
