If there is a people anywhere in the world, strategically located to best understand politics and society of the United States, it should be Canadians.
Yet once again, the attitude of most Canadians, especially in central Canada, toward the choice of Americans for George Bush as their president has shown proximity does not automatically lend itself to a better understanding of the other.
There have been occasions in the past when Canadians felt miffed by American politics. Ronald Reagan's first official visit to Ottawa as president in 1981, when Pierre Trudeau was the prime minister, for instance, had its awkward moments.
There has been nothing, however, to match recent insults from Canadians, in private conversations and in public outbursts, thrown in the direction of American conservatives and their support for Bush.
Tirades by Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish have become tiresome displays.
It is undeniable more than a generation of elite-driven anti-Americanism in Canadian politics has now brought the country into a deeply troubling situation with the one country that has the most profound influence on the well-being of all Canadians.
Canada's real or perceived impasse with the United States is a subject of increasing importance, and demands serious examination from all Canadians.

well lemme see. the entire canadian army could fit in the montreal staduim, their underwater navy consists of four second hand submarines, one of which is undergoing repairs after breaking down on it's delivery voyage, their air force - what air force?
and they sit atop all that natural gas. how long do you think they'll remain independent if we werent' on their southern border?
Canada has always been a remora (suckerfish) to us. They attach themselves to us and are protected by staying attached. Our expectations of Canada are so low, and they continue to fall short fo those low expectations.
Other than a receptacle for dissatisfied liberals, what benefit is this country to the U.S.? It's another welfare experiment that's about to go bust.
I do business with a number of Canadians and I consider them very nice people. Politics has only come up once in our conversations and I was surprised at how supportive the guy was about the U.S. and the Bush Presidency. Unfortunately he confirmed that he is almost alone in his sentiment. Too bad. They are people who have been brainwashed by a nanny state mentality and a leftist press. There but for the grace of God goes the U.S.
Canada can rot as far as I'm concerned. After all that they have said about us, the day will never come when I will advocate anyone ever lifting even a finger to help them, no matter what their future problem.
Goodbye, Canada. You used to fight evil once. Sorry to see you become it.
Having been forced to spend some time in Canada for work I have to say that, if all I had to judge us by was their media I would hate us too.

tha sad part is that i re,member during the iran hostage crises how they sheltered a bunch of our people in their own embassy - knowing that if they were caught that they would be in serious trouble. They kept our people safe until it was ok to fly them home -which they did at their expense. what a class act!
but looking at them now makes me mourn for the glory days of their pre-leftist past, when they were true allies and more that that - friends!
I am Canadian and I must say that most Canadians are not anti American. Just like in many places in the world it's the loud mouths that make better press and not the majority.
Canada is so irrelevant.
What makes them think we give a Democ-RATS @$$ what they try to think?
that's what they have chosen to become. i lament the old days when they were our partners. now they sit up there, take advantage of the security we provide and diss us for it.
they're trying to emulate europe, which is becomming a cesspool of liberalism - that's their mistake.
I have been to Canada several times. I have never met a Canadian that I did not like. I have had conversations where people were agreeable but not in accord.
BTW I love Nova Scotia the best.
