Palestinian PM visits Arafat Palestinian officials deny reports that Arafat is dead

Tuesday, November 9, 2004 Posted: 9:49 AM EST (1449 GMT)

PARIS, France (CNN) -- Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qorei was permitted to see ailing Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat briefly in a French hospital Tuesday, hours after French hospital officials said Arafat's condition had worsened, Palestinian officials said.

Qorei was part of a Palestinian delegation that arrived in Paris Monday in hopes of visiting Arafat. The delegation was inside the hospital for two hours, but only Qorei was allowed to see Arafat.

Meanwhile, a Palestinian official in Paris denied new reports that Arafat had died.

Earlier, a spokesman for the Percy Military Hospital said Arafat's condition grew worse overnight, and he slipped deeper into a coma.

It remains unclear whether his medical condition or an intense public row with Arafat's wife, Suha, is preventing other visits with the gravely ill leader, who arrived in Paris for treatment October 29.

The delegation postponed a planned trip over the weekend after Suha Arafat, in an emotional phone call to Al-Jazeera television network, accused the Palestinian leadership of conspiring against her husband..." (End excerpt)

A Palestinian delegation visited him supposedly and they finally were allowed to speak with some of the French doctors. He is reported as still alive, in a coma and beyond that, it's anyone's guess.

French Hospital Officials: Arafat in a Coma

Arafat's Condition Deteriorates Rapidly

"all anyone can say is that it's a good thing he's in France."

Smart move by Sharon to accomodate the exit. If Arafat had died in Ramallah there might have been a gigantic funeral parade to jerusalem that would have been a PR disaster for Israel. As it is, the entire death scene has been turned into a farce. A fitting and tawdry end to the awful Arafat era.

Excellent point, my thoughts too, although I'm unsure he's as terminal as some are reporting. He may be close, but comment made by French doctors claiming that his coma is "technically reversible" is very strange.

Not sure if he is the same one who earlier stated that Arafat was already dead.

There had been a problem with Arafat's wife not allowing anyone to visit nor talk with his doctors.

Perhaps the PM believed that Arafat was dead until he visited. Or maybe he was spinning a story about Arafat's death so that power could quickly be transferred.

Suddenly he now says Arafat is alive. Something is not quite right here, although I'm not sure what.

FOX reported that Arafat is scheduled to die later today.

According to their sources, an agreement has been reached to "pull the plug".

Could be embarrassing for the world to know that he was poisoned by his brothers-in-arms.

That is what it sounds like, doesn't it? It seems that most would respect the wishes of a patient's wife and doctors regarding visitation. If they really wanted him to live, they would want him to have rest.

It sounds so much like some sort of subterfuge is going on. Politicians aren't the only ones who play the media for all they're worth.

That French medicine is really remarkable.
Arafat dies.
They bring him back to life.
Then the check bounces, so they kill him.
Then a new check is written, back to life he comes.

This could go on and on and on...

Someone needs to hide the Energizer batteries.

Ohhh, SOMEBODY just go and accidentally 'trip' over the life-support machine cord already!

I prefer the more direct approach! ;-)

CFRB1010AM Radio in Toronto covered a press conference from Paris about 20 minutes ago with the Pali PM. Claims Arafat not dead but in deep coma. Talked about PA government being in control, planning for elections in 60 day cycle after Arafat dies. Repeatedly stressed the "democratic future" of PA. I can't believe any chance this would be said if Arafat had any hope. Personally, I think he's already dead. If so, all the better. Hope he rots you-know-where.
